Colorado Eagles News Release

LOVELAND, Colo. -With a bizarre first period, the Colorado Eagles (32-15-0-2) were unable to find any sort of lead in a 5-3 loss to the Stockton Thunder (15-32-1-0) on Friday evening at Stockton Arena.

Just 1:45 into the first frame Stockton forward Jack MacLellan was credited with an empty net goal when the puck found the back of an empty Colorado net as Eagles netminder Clarke Saunders was pulled for the extra attacker on a delayed penalty against Stockton, 1-0. Colorado forward Kyle Kraemer answered 5:40 into the first on a breakaway as he beat Thunder goalie Kent Simpson top-shelf to tie the score, 1-1. The Thunder found themselves on a 5-on-3 power play and forward Tyler Maxwell took full advantage as he stuffed the puck home to take the 2-1 lead, 7:17 into the first. Just over 10 seconds later Stockton forward J.T. Barnett netted the Thunder's second power-play goal of the night to gain the 3-1 lead over Colorado.

With only 6:40 left in the second period, Eagles forward Taylor Vause took a blind backhanded shot to put the puck behind Simpson and make it a one-goal game, 3-2. Less than two minutes later, Eagles forward Brock Nixon netted the Eagles first power-play goal with a slapshot from the high slot to tie the game, 3-3.

Maxwell scored his second goal of the game to take the 4-3 edge over the Eagles as he found the back of the net off of his own rebound, 17:55 into the third stanza. With only eight seconds left in regulation, Stockton forward Tyler Shattock scored the Thunder's second empty-net goal of the night to take the 5-3 lead. Saunders held off 28 of the Thunder's 31 shots while Simpson shut down 22 of the Eagles 25 shots to hang on for the 5-3 victory.
