Ice Bears Split Weekend with Cottonmouths

Knoxville Ice Bears News Release

Knoxville, TN - The Knoxville Ice Bears fell short to the Columbus Cottonmouths 2-1, in front of a sold-out crowd of 5,132 people for the annual Wiener Dog Race Night.

The first period of play consisted of a heavy defensive battle that resembled a continuation of the game just 24 hours ago - when no goals were scored in the second and third periods resulting in an Ice Bears shoot-out victory.

The game started to pick up when Eric Satim of the Ice Bears was sent to the penalty box for a goalie interference and abuse of an official call. A few seconds into the Columbus power play, the Cottonmouths' lead scorer Matt Gingera snuck the puck past Knoxville goaltender Torris taking the lead 1-0.

Shortly after the Columbus goal, the penalty clock was reset to two minutes, eliminating one of Satim's penalty calls. Ice Bears Head Coach, Mike Craigen, was not happy with the calls and expressed his concerns to the official resulting in a game misconduct forcing Craigen to be ejected from the game and an additional 2 minutes added to the board to put the Ice Bears down two men for a full two minutes.

Despite the series of penalty calls for the Ice Bears, Knoxville escaped the five-on-three power play leaving them behind only one goal leading up to the final frame.

After Tyler MacPherson of the Cottonmouths was sent to the box for hooking at the 7:46 mark in the third period, Jarrett Rush of the Ice Bears fired the puck with traffic around the net after a reflected shot, with assists from Frankie Drolet and Robbie Donahoe.

Two minutes after the Ice Bears goal, Gingera of the Cottonmouths scored the eventual game winner despite a valiant effort in the final five minutes of play for the Ice Bears.

The Ice Bears return to action at home against the Louisiana IceGators on Feb. 13 for Jimmy Buffett Beach Night benefiting East TN Alzheimer's Association. To order tickets call 865-656-4444 or visit www.knoxvilleicebears.com.
