SAINT JOHN - Mathieu Joseph scored twice in a five-point night to lead the Saint John Sea Dogs to a 5-2 victory over the Sherbrooke Phoenix in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Friday at Harbour Station.

Linemate Samuel Dove-McFalls contributed a goal and three assists for Saint John (27-18-1-6) while Adam Bateman added a goal and three points. Justice Dundas also scored for the Sea Dogs as the team snapped a two-game losing skid.

Chase Harwell and Raphael Lafontaine responded for Sherbrooke (29-19-1-3), which have lost two straight.

Saint John opened the scoring eight minutes into the game while playing a man short.

Dove-McFalls darted up the right wing side for a breakaway chance, but he decided to feed a cross-crease pass to a streaking Joseph, who chipped the puck past Phoenix goalie Evan Fitzpatrick.

Sherbrooke used the same power play to tie the game 1:23 later.

Defenceman Carl Neill fired a stretch pass from his own zone that deflected into Saint John territory and rolled slowly toward the goal. Harwell chased it down, and dove head-long to poke the puck between the legs of a surprised Sebastien Auger in the Sea Dogs' net.

Saint John lost the services of forward Bokondji Imama with seven minutes left in the frame. The Montreal-native was assessed a cross-checking major penalty and game misconduct for a hit on Phoenix defenceman Julien Bahl.

The game remained tied 1-1 at the end of the first period.

Auger made his best stop of the game about seven minutes into the second.

Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Cameron Darcy broke in alone from the Saint John blueline and attempted a wrist shot that Auger snared with his glove.

Sherbrooke took the lead halfway through the middle frame when a shot from the left point deflected in front to Lafontaine, who spun and fired a wrister that got past Auger's blocker.

The Sea Dogs responded on the power play with just over three minutes remaining in the period when a Bateman shot from the middle of the point was deflected past Fitzpatrick by Dundas in the slot.

Saint John took the lead with 2.6 seconds left in the period, moments after another man advantage ended.

Joseph fed a pass from the right boards to a wide open Bateman in the left circle. The veteran blueliner faked a shot, and then whistled a wrister under Fitzpatrick's right arm.

Joseph buried a power play goal under five minutes into the third period.

The Chambly, Quebec, native took a pass on the faceoff dot in the right circle and slapped a one-timer inside the near post to give Saint John a 4-2 lead.

The Sea Dogs appeared to score another goal with four-and-a-half minutes left when a pass into the low slot deflected off a Sherbrooke player and into the goal. The play was ruled no-goal and Saint John forward Nathan Noel was given a goaltender interference penalty.

But the home team killed off the infraction, and Dove-McFalls finished the scoring with an empty-net goal with twenty seconds remaining. Joseph assisted on the marker for his fifth point in the game. It's just the seventh time a Sea Dog has finished a regular season game with five points.

Auger earned the victory with 30 saves while Fitzpatrick made 28 stops in defeat.

Joseph was an easy choice for first star while Bateman took the second-star selection. Dove-McFalls was named third star in front of 3,281 fans in attendance.

Saint John's next game is Sunday, February 8th, at 3 p.m. against the Moncton Wildcats at Harbour Station. The first 400 female fans will receive a free carnation in recognition of Valentine's Day, courtesy of Atlantic Superstore.
