Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

BOISBRIAND, QC - Philippe Sanche scored twice and Samuel Montembault turned aside 21 shots as the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada blanked the Saint John Sea Dogs, 4-0, in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Saturday at Centre d'excellence Sports Rousseau.

Yvan Mongo and Danick Martel also tallied for Blainville-Boisbriand (30-12-2-5), which earned a split of the two-game season series with Saint John.

Samuel Dove-McFalls, Mathieu Joseph and Adam Bateman all had three shots on goal to lead the Sea Dogs' offence.

The Armada opened the scoring eight minutes into the first period with a power play goal.

Defenceman Philippe Bureau-Blais hammered a slap shot from the centre of the blueline that Sanche deflected past the blocker of Sea Dogs' goalie Alex Bishop.

Saint John's best chance of the period came with about five minutes remaining in the frame when Juraj Siska was left alone in front of the goal. The Slovakian winger received a pass off the right side of the crease and fired a quick backhand shot that Blainville-Boisbriand netminder Samuel Montembault kicked away with his right leg.

Bishop kept the game a one-goal affair with a key stop in the final minute of the period.

Nikita Jevpalovs, who signed as a free agent with the NHL's San Jose Sharks earlier this week, took a pass in the middle of the Sea Dog zone for a brief breakaway. He attempted a deke that Bishop denied with his right side.

Fabrizio Ricci nearly extended the Armada lead halfway through the second period when he was sprung on a partial breakaway on the left wing side. Ricci's shot was stopped by Bishop with his blocker. The goalie also thwarted a rebound chance from Morgan Adams-Moisan.

A Sea Dog power play produced their best scoring opportunity of the period.

With about seven minutes left, Mathieu Joseph grabbed the rebound of a shot from the left wing. From the right side of the crease, the Chambly, Quebec, product put a backhand shot toward the net, but Montembault sprawled down to his left and kept the puck in front of the goal line. Video replay confirmed the puck did not enter the net.

Blainville-Boisbriand doubled its lead with under four minutes left in the second period when Yvan Mongo led a 2-on-1 on the left wing side. His cross-crease pass deflected off a Sea Dog backchecker and into the net.

Saint John were forced to kill three minutes of a major penalty early in the third period when Bailey Webster laid a heavy hit on Sanche, and then dropped his gloves with Jevpalovs, who would not engage the defenceman.

Webster was given an aggressor major penalty and game misconduct. The Sea Dogs killed the opportunity.

But Blainville-Boisbriand added to its lead with six minutes remaining when Martel moved in on the left wing and zipped a wrist shot past Bishop's glove.

Sanche wrapped up the scoring two minutes later, faking a shot in front of the net and then roofing the puck from the right side of the crease, beyond the outstretched glove of Bishop.

Montembault made 21 saves for his second shutout of the season. Bishop took the loss with 29 saves.

Sanche's two goals led to a first-star selection while Mongo earned second star with a goal and assist. Bishop was named third star in front of 2,903 fans in attendance.

The Sea Dogs' next game is Wednesday, February 4th, at 7 p.m. against the Rimouski Oceanic at Harbour Station. Tickets are available at the Harbour Station Box Office, online at harbourstation.ca or by calling 657-1234.
