Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
Medicine Hat, AB -- The Tigers came into Sunday night's matchup against the Edmonton Oil Kings riding a mini 3 game winning streak. Sunday also marked the first divisional game of the 2015 calendar. Games within the division are crucial to the Tigers success down the stretch in order to increase the gap on the teams chasing them.
The Tigers started the game flying, just 49 seconds in Dryden Hunt was setup by linemates Matt Bradley and Chad Butcher to open the scoring. The goal quickly extended Hunt's point streak to 20 games, the longest streak this season in the WHL. The Tigers, shorthanded on this night due to injury and suspension, got depth scoring from Alex Mowbray, Mowbray received a pass from Blake Penner and rifled home his 7th of the year to snap a long goalless drought. The home side however would cut into the lead midway through the period as Tyler Robertson batted home a rebound off a Mads Eller shot to pull the Oil Kings within 1 after 20 minutes.
In a mirror image of the first period the Tigers would step onto the ice with a power play to start the second and just 34 seconds in, Cole Sanford rattled the twine for his 40th of the season in just his 47 game. Sanford's goals would be the only goal in the period as Nick Schneider, making his 3rd straight start, was solid stopping all 10 shots his way in the frame.
In a similar fashion to Friday's game Ty Stanton threw a large hit on an opposing player making contact to the head of the Oil King forward sending Stanton to the showers with a 5 minute major for a check to the head and a game misconduct. The Tigers would kill off the major, which proved to be a huge momentum boost for the Tabbies.
The visitors would open the scoring again in the third period, this time just not within the first minute of the frame. Matt Bradley would net his 10th of the season 4 and a half minutes in, with both linemates, Hunt and Butcher getting the helpers. Edmonton however would cut into the 3 goal lead with a power play marker just before the midway point of the period, Davis Koch wristed a shot past Schneider on a feed from Blake Orban. Not to be outdone was the Tigers power play. Trevor Cox, the quarterback for the first unit, potted his 20th of the season to give the Tigers their 3 goal lead once again. The Tabbies would hold onto the victory, their 4th in a row.
