SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - The Mississippi RiverKings (17-15-2) scored two shorthanded goals and used that to get past the Peoria Rivermen (19-11-3), 4-2, at the Landers Center Saturday night.

The RiverKings scored the first of their two shorthanded goals at 12:22 of the first period. Leo Thomas deflected a pass at the blue line in the defensive zone, then scooped up the puck and started a 2-on-1 with Paul Ciarelli. Thomas went down the left wing and elected to shoot instead of pass and he beat Dustin Carlson for a 1-0 lead.

Ciarelli would get involved in the scoring twice in the second to build a 3-0 lead for the RiverKings. On the first goal Joey Holka took a shot from the left circle, which Carlson got a glove on. The rebound popped in front and Ciarelli jammed it in for a 2-0 lead at 2:52 on his second goal of the season. He added his third goal of the year, and second of the game, at 15:39 on a similar play. Holka shot the puck from the right circle and again Ciarelli stashed in the rebound in the crease for a 3-0 lead.

Peoria changed momentum late in the second with a power-play goal by Jake Trask, his fourth power-play goal in five games against the RiverKings, with 57 seconds left in the period to cut the lead to 3-1. The Rivermen carried that momentum into the third and made it a one-goal margin at 8:02 when Jordan Sims potted a loose puck near the front of the net. A few minutes later Peoria would go on the power play with a chance to pull even. Just over a minute into the penalty kill the RiverKings started a 3-on-1 with Linden Bahm getting the puck to Bryon Paulazzo. He found Reid Campbell cutting down the left wing and he buried a shot from the circle for 4-2 lead.

Peter Di Salvo would make 10 saves in the third period to help preserve the win for Mississippi.
