The Saginaw Spirit travelled to the Barrie Molson Centre to take on the Barrie Colts in their first matchup of the 2014-2015 season. The Spirit ended their third straight road game with a 3-1 loss against the Barrie Colts on Saturday night.
The Saginaw Spirit opened up the scoring towards the midway part of the first period after Jesse Barwell fired home his 8th goal of the season. The goal that allowed the Spirit to take the first lead of the game came at the 7:22 mark with the help of Dylan Sadowy and Mitchell Stephens. Shots on goal after the first 20 minutes of play favored the Colts 11-8.
The Barrie Colts took the reigns in the second period of play, netting two goals against Saginaw's starting goaltender Evan Cormier. Ben Hawerchuk of the Colts struck first at the 5:08 mark, tying the game 1-1 with the help of Matthew Kreis and Jonathan Laser. Towards the later end of the period Rasmus Andersson netted the goal that gave Barrie the 2-1 lead, with assists coming from Roy Radke and Cordell James at 17:55. Shots favored the Saginaw Spirit in the second period 11-8.
Saginaw was stuck in a bit of a deadlock in the third period, unable to find the back of the net before the final buzzer sounded. The Spirit pulled goaltender Evan Cormier in hopes of tying the score at two, but the Colts snuck in an empty netted goal putting the score to 3-1 over Saginaw. Brenden Lemieux was the empty netted goal scorer for Barrie at the 19:16 mark, with the lone assist being credited to Kevin Lebanc. Final shots on goal read Barrie 20, Saginaw 19.
The Saginaw Spirit return to the Dow Event Center for a seven game home stretch starting Thursday, January 29th where the Spirit will take the ice against their Michigan rival, the Plymouth Whalers. Puck is scheduled to drop at 7:11 p.m.
