Regina Pats News Release

Regina, Saskatchewan - Jaimen Yakubowski and the Moose Jaw Warriors (20-24-3-1) spoiled the Regina Pats' (26-16-3-2) score clock party when they downed the Queen City Kids 4-3 in overtime at the Brandt Centre on Friday night.

With the help of rappelling soldiers, pyrotechnics and a phenomenal light show, the Pats unveiled their brand new score clock prior to puck drop. Fog from the pregame ceremony was still in the air when starting goaltenders Daniel Wapple and Zach Sawchenko traded off monstrous saves mere seconds apart early in the first stanza. Torrin White silenced the loud crowd when he potted the first goal of the contest to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. Not surprisingly, the two longtime rivals jousted back and forth on a variety of occasions - often resulting in off-setting minors. The opening frame concluded with the visitors ahead by one in the goal category. They also led 12-10 on the shot clock.

The Blue and White were on their heels for the first portion of the second frame. Wapple had to come up big on multiple occasions - most notably on the Pats' first penalty kill of the period. Sam Steel rewarded his goaltender's efforts by scoring his 11th of the season. Unfortunately, Wapple couldn't hold up on his team's second kill of the stanza when the towering Axel Blomqvist scored from between the hashmarks. The Pats were able to mount pressure in the latter stages of the second, but their forecheck didn't result in shots on goal. At the end of 40 minutes, the Pats trailed 2-1, while the Warriors continued their dominance in shots on goal, 24-13.

Midway through the third, a long howitzer from Tanner Eberle fooled Wapple, rang iron, and dropped straight down. The loose puck sat inches away from the goal line. Yakubowski crashed the goal to bury the biscuit while knocking the net off its moorings. Taylor Cooper inched the home team closer to tying up the hockey game when he delivered a power play goal with just under five minutes left in the contest. The comeback was completed all thanks to Pavel Padakin. The Ukrainian-born lit the lamp a minute later to knot the game up at three apiece. Padakin's goal was big as the Highway One clash went into overtime. At the end of regulation, the shots were 35-21 in favour of the visitors.

In the extra period, the Warriors were given a four-on-three power play when Sergey Zborovskiy sat for a tripping minor. Former Pat Jack Rodewald cashed in to sink the Blue and White, 4-3.

The Pats will be back in action tomorrow night when they travel back to Brandon to take on Morgan Klimchuk and the Wheat Kings in a 7:30 puck drop. Tune in with Home Depot Pats Hockey on 620 CKRM or WHL Live Web TV.
