This Week's Schedule:

Friday, January 23rd, 2015, 7:00pm vs. Vancouver - The Hurricanes and Giants will meet again for the second and final time this season. After a 4-0 win back on November 26th, the Canes will go for the sweep Friday night. In their first meeting, Jamal Watson had 2 goals, Jaeger White (1G, 1A) and Andrew Nielsen added another goal. In addition, Stuart Skinner pitched a 37 save shutout for the first shutout of his career.

Saturday, January 24th, 2015, 7:00pm vs. Prince George- This is the Hurricanes second meeting with the Cougars this season with the Hurricanes looking for payback after their 6-2 loss. In that game, Kord Pankewicz and Carter Folk each figured in on the scoring.

The week that was:

It was 3 games in 5 nights for the Hurricanes last week, starting Tuesday when they were home to Red Deer. Tyler Wong scored his 15th of the season before the Rebels Conner Bleackley tied it up in the 2nd for a 1-1 game through 40 minutes. While the Hurricanes managed to score twice in the 3rd (on goals from Johnny Wesley - in his first game as a Cane - and Carter Folk), the Rebels scored 4 times including an empty netter to win 5-3.

The team then hit the road and took on the Brandon Wheat Kings on Friday. The WK's opened up a 3-0 lead in the first before Andrew Nielsen score to make it 3-1 after 20 minutes. Giorgio Estephan and Ryley Lindgren score to tie things up 3-3 in the 2nd, but before the period was done Brandon added 2 more for a 5-3 lead. Tyler Wong and Mike Winther scored in the 3rd, but the Brandon added 3 more and skated to an 8-5 win.

The team closed out their road trip against Moose Jaw on Saturday and were shutout 5-0. The Warriors had a 1-0 lead after the 1st, added 3 more in the 2nd and another in the 3rd for the win and handing the Hurricanes their 4th straight loss. Jayden Sittler faced 48 shots in the game and the Hurricanes were 0/4 on the PP while Moose Jaw was 0/6.

News & Notes:

NHL Central Scouting: The NHL's Central Scouting Midterm rankings were released Tuesday and a pair of Lethbridge Hurricanes defenseman cracked the list. Andrew Nielsen and Kade Jensen who were on the November "Players to Watch" list were ranked 69th and 164th respectively.

Ranked 69th, Nielsen is in his first season in the WHL and has solidified himself on the blue line all season playing in 36 games. The 18-year old from Red Deer leads all Hurricanes rookies in scoring with 16 points (4G, 12A) in his 36 games played and he has 76 PIM's. In the league, the 6'3, 207 lb. blueliner comes in ranked 21st in rookie scoring.

Kade Jensen is in his second full season in the Western Hockey League and sits 8th in team scoring. The 6-foot-1 and a half, 191 pound blue liner from Calgary has played in 35 games registering 3 goals and 8 assists to go along with his 52 penalty minutes.

Wheeling & Dealing: The Lethbridge Hurricanes made 10 roster moves leading up to the Jan. 10th trade deadline.

On Saturday, Jan.10th - The "˜Canes acquired 18-year-old, 6'6" and 185 lbs defenseman Scott Allan from the Seattle Thunderbirds in exchange for a 5th round pick in 2016.

The "˜Canes traded 18-year-old defenseman Bryton Sayers to the Victoria Royals in exchange for a 5th round pick in 2016.

The "˜Canes traded 18-year-old forward Miles Warkentine to the Swift Current in exchange for a conditional 7th round pick in 2017

On Friday, Jan.9th - The "˜Canes dealt 20-year-old forward Zane Jones to the Vancouver Giants in exchange for 17-year-old forward Johnny Wesley

"˜Canes acquired 20-year-old forward Mike Winther from the Kamloops Blazers in exchange for an 8th round draft pick in 2017.

On Thursday, Jan.8th - The "˜Canes acquired 18-year-old goaltender Jayden Sittler from the Victoria Royals in exchange for a 7th round pick in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft.

The addition of Sittler, also saw the Hurricanes reassign 18-year-old goaltender Zac Robidoux to the Portage Terriers of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.

The "˜Canes also dealt 19-year-old defenseman Lenny Hackman to the Kootenay Ice in exchange for a 12th round selection in the 2015 bantam draft.

On Tuesday, Jan.6th - The "˜Canes acquired 17-year-old defenseman Brady Reagan from the Regina Pats in exchange for 19-year-old forward Taylor Cooper

The "˜Canes claimed 17-year-old rookie import forward Florian Baltram off waivers from the Seattle Thunderbirds.

9th All Time: Hurricanes Head Coach and GM Peter Anholt is currently 9th all-time in WHL wins. Anholt currently has 454 victories.

NHL Camps: Nick Walters signed an Amateur Tryout Agreement with the Columbus Blue Jackets and attended their Prospects Camp in September.

Prospect Watch: Jordy Bellerive, Nick Watson (Team BC) and Zane Franklin (Team Alberta) and Brett Davis (Team Manitoba) have all made their provincial U16 teams to compete at the Canada Winter Games scheduled for February 19th to March 1st in Prince George.

Jesse Sheen, Jake Ashton, and Ayden Roche-Setoguchi (Calgary Buffaloes); Connor Rokosh (SSAC Athletics) and Barrett Sheen (UFA Bisons) all participated in the Mac's tournament in Calgary. The tournament wrapped up January 1st, with all Hurricanes prospects and their teams making it to the playoff round (eventually losing in the quarters and semifinals).

Jamal Watson is the longest serving Hurricane on the roster with 245 games played, the career record of games played is 336 by Shane Peacock (1989-94)

Promotions/Events:

Hockey: It's in our Blood: The Lethbridge Hurricanes are excited to partner with Canadian Blood Services and ROCK 106 as we encourage residents in Lethbridge and Southern Alberta to become a blood donor. For the third year, the Hurricanes and their Central Division rivals - the Red Deer Rebels - are renewing their off ice rivalry in the "It's in our blood" challenge. The goal for the month of January is to see who can bring in the most blood donations. Residents can learn what their blood type is and then book an appointment by calling 1-888-2-DONATE (1-888-236-6283).
