IceMen Rally to Earn a Point in Overtime Loss

EVANSVILLE, Ind.- Down 2-0 after the first period, the Evansville IceMen, presented by C00rs Light, rallied to earn a point in an overtime loss against the Cincinnati Cyclones. With that point the IceMen (11-22-3-2, 27 points) hang onto to a sixth place tie in the ECHL's North Division.
In the first period, the referees waived off a potential IceMen goal. The tally would have come from Jordan Sims and would have given the IceMen a 1-0 lead, but the referees over ruled the goal judge and waived off Sims' first IceMen strike.
Cincinnati responded with a pair of goals coming just 24 seconds apart. The first goal came from Christiaan Minella with just four seconds left on a Cyclone power play. Cincinnati's Geoff Irwin netted the Cyclones second goal that gave Cincinnati a 2-0 lead.
The IceMen fought back in the second period with their first power play of the game. Troy Rutkowski fired a shot at the net that Sam Brittain stopped. Patrick Kennedy tracked down the rebound and drove it into the back of the net to cut the Cyclone lead to 2-1.
Brandon Wong picked up the first of his two points on the night with an assist on Kennedy's eighth of the season. Wong leads the IceMen with 30 points on the season (13 goals, 17 assist).
Later in the second period, Kevin Harvey tapped the puck free from the wall to Kale Kerbashian. Kerbashian slid the puck to Jarret Lukin who slammed in the goal to tie the game at two going into the final period of play.
Evansville took the lead in the third. Wong fired a wrap around shot that hit the post. Zack Currie blasted the rebound from the faceoff dot past Brittain to give the IceMen a 3-2 lead. Lukin added an assist on Currie's third of the season and his second in his last three games.
As the clock ticked under the three-minute mark, Joe Basaraba found Stephan Vigier in front of the IceMen net. Vigier scored all alone to tie the game at three. Neither team could break the tie in regulation so the game moved to overtime.
In the extra frame, Irwin scored the game winner on rebounds from Branden Gracel and Mackenzie Weegar. Irwin's second of the night gave Cincinnati its 18th victory and 40th point of the season
Scott Greenham made 32 saves, but wound up with the loss. Sam Brittain stopped 27 shots to get the win.
The IceMen will continue their three-game series against the Cyclones on Friday in Cincinnati. Then Evansville will travel Indy to take on the Fuel in the first game of a home-and-home on Saturday.
