Brennan Makes 44 Saves, Steelheads Drop Fifth Straight

January 18, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Mississauga Steelheads News Release

The Steelheads played host to the Owen Sound Attack, as they finished up a three in three weekend that did not start they way Mississauga wanted. A win today would snap the Trout's current four-game losing skid. Members of the Streetsville Hockey League were in attendance for this game, presented by Scotiabank Skates in support of the Trillium Health Partners Foundation and the Oakville Hospital Foundation.

Jacob Brennan and Michael McNiven got the nod today from their respective coaches and assumed their positions in the crease. Bobby MacIntyre had a scoring chance early on for the Trout, but their momentum was stifled by a Steelheads penalty three minutes into the game. Mississauga killed off the chance with a solid outing by the four-man unit and continued to fight their way into the game. The physical play ramped up considerably as the period drew near the halfway point. Brennan made a great reaction save with the glove on a redirection, keeping the game scoreless. Bryson Cianfrone had a shot that caused a juicy rebound, but Sam Babintsev was hauled down before he could get to it. The Steelheads were given a power play as a result, and didn't waste any time. Sean Day scored his third goal in as many games as a deflection off of Zach Nastasiuk eluded McNiven. A couple of late penalties left the Trout on a four-on-three penatly kill to end the frame. Shots were tight in this one, a slight 10-8 edge for the Attack, but the Steelheads are up 1-0 on the scoreboard.

As the penalties expired, McLeod's line put the pressure on the Attack with a pair of scoring chances. Brennan was as sharp as he was busy today, making a dozen saves in the first eight minutes of the second period. Nastasiuk was able to solve him though on a rebound to tie the game at one apiece. A minute later, the Steelheads headed back to the power play. McLeod had an open cage on the doorstep, but fanned on the feed from Josh Burnside. The Steelheads defence came to Brennan's aid, turning away a flurry of shots. Nick Zottl and Day each saved sure goals with great plays behind their sprawled goaltender. The Steelheads fell well behind in the shot count in the middle frame, but still had a chance to take the victory.

The Attack came out quickly in the third, and succeeded in breaking the tie at 2:23. Petrus Palmu beat Brennan high glove side with the would-be game winner. Nastasiuk potted his second of the game, giving Owen Sound a little insurance to ride out the frame. The Steelheads began to press, creating chances by way of possession in the offensive zone. Jared Walsh had a couple of great pinches that led to rebound opportunities for Mississauga, but the Owen Sound defence were equal to the task. Brennan headed to the bench in favour of an extra skater with a little more than two minutes to go as Mississauga tried desperately to tie the score. The chances were there, but McNiven wasn't giving up much this afternoon. Brennan made 44 saves in the losing effort.
