Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

GATINEAU, QC - Jake Coughler's second goal of the night with under nine minutes to play stood up as the game-winner as the Gatineau Olympiques defeated the Saint John Sea Dogs, 4-2, in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Saturday at Centre Robert-Guertin.

Marc Beckstead also scored twice for Gatineau (18-24-0-4), which extended its winning streak to three games.

Justice Dundas and Mathieu Joseph replied for Saint John (24-14-1-5), which fell for the fifth time in six games.

A complete scoring summary is available HERE.

The first good scoring chance of the night went to the home team.

Gatineau's Yan Pavel Laplante took a back-door feed off the right side of the crease, but his short one-timer was stopped by the left leg of Sebastien Auger, who made the save in a face-down snow angel position.

The Sea Dogs countered about a minute later when Adam Marsh carried the puck on the left wing and fired a wrister from the circle that was gloved by goalie Francois Brassard.

Saint John opened the scoring just past eight minutes in.

Dundas brought the puck into the right wing side of the Olympiques' zone and snapped a quick wrister from the top of the circle that got past Brassard's blocker.

The Sea Dogs were forced to kill three penalties - and part of a fourth - in the first period.

Gatineau thought they had tied the game four minutes into the second period when Laplante was the last player to touch a puck that went over Auger's right shoulder and into the goal. But video review revealed the puck was directed in by the hand of the Olympiques' forward.

Coughler did even the score about two-and-a-half minutes later, ripping home a pass from behind the net by Tommy Veilleux.

Joseph restored the Saint John lead just before the halfway point of the period.

Bokondji Imama carried the puck from his own zone up the right wing and ripped a pass to Joseph on the left side. The 17-year-old winger zipped a wrist shot inside the short-side post, under Brassard's blocker.

On the ensuing faceoff at centre ice, Olympiques created a quick 2-on-1. Laplante found Beckstead charging the net for a chip shot, but Auger robbed the second-year forward with a big glove save.

Gatineau tied the game nearly seven minutes into the third period when defenceman Alexandre Carrier took a shot from the right point that deflected downward and through Auger's legs. Beckstead bunted the loose puck into an open net to make it 2-2.

The Olympiques took the lead with eight-and-a-half minutes to play when Veilleux flicked a hard pass from the left corner to the front of the net, where Coughler one-timed his second goal of the night through Auger's legs.

The Sea Dogs pulled Auger for an extra skater with more than one minute remaining. Beckstead closed out the scoring with an empty-net goal with 37.7 seconds remaining.

Saint John lost the services of Dundas for the final 11 seconds after he was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for a butt-end to Brassard.

Brassard earned the win with 31 saves. Auger made 35 saves and was named second star in defeat.

Coughler and Beckstead were named first and third star, respectively, for their two-goal games.
