Wheeling Nailers News Release
BRAMPTON, ON- When the Wheeling Nailers crossed the international border into Canada, they brought their offense with them. After scoring five goals on Friday, the Nailers lit the lamp seven times on Saturday, pounding the Brampton Beast for the second straight night. Shawn Skelly was the lone multiple goal scorer for Wheeling, who received points from 13 of 16 skaters in a 7-2 triumph at Powerade Centre.
The Nailers put together a strong first period, grabbing the first two goals of the evening. The first marker came at the 4:24 mark, when David Gilbert slipped a pass out of the right corner to Derek Army in the circle. Army's shot got deflected, flipping up and over Trevor Cann's right shoulder. Later in the frame, Wheeling added to its advantage. Clark Seymour stepped up from the right point, dishing a pass through the slot to Patrick McGrath, who powered in a one-timer from the bottom of the left circle.
The score remained 2-0 until the final minute of the second period, when both teams found the back of the net. Brampton's goal came with 58 seconds remaining, when David Ling caught a puck at the offensive blueline, broke away, and slipped a shot just underneath Eric Hartzell's glove. The Nailers came back with a quick answer, regaining their two-goal edge with 4.3 seconds remaining. Tyler Fernandez and Zack Torquato entered the zone on a 2-on-1 rush, with Torquato slapping a shot on goal from the right side. Cann made the save, but a juicy rebound kicked out to Morgan Ellis, who cashed in from the slot.
The late tally gave Wheeling plenty of momentum into the third period, which resulted in four more goals. Tyler Murovich swept a pass through the slot to Shawn Skelly, who finished off the play on the left side of the crease. 1:23 later, David Gilbert joined the scoring parade, as he banged home a centering pass by Derek Army. David Makowski drilled in a power play goal from the middle of the blueline at the 13-minute mark, before Shawn Skelly completed the scoring with a tap-in on the right side of the crease. Jason Pitton registered a third period goal for Brampton, but other than that, the Nailers experienced little trouble, winning 7-2.
Eric Hartzell picked up the win for Wheeling, swatting aside 22 of the 24 shots he faced. Trevor Cann took the loss for Brampton, surrendering seven goals on 46 shots.
