Beast Split Doubleheader against Reading Royals

Brampton Beast News Release

READING, PA - The Brampton Beast wound up splitting a back-to-back doubleheader against the Reading Royals to conclude a five-game road trip that saw the team go 2-2-1 away from the Powerade Centre. After battling back from a three-goal deficit in the first period to come within a single shot of tying the game, road-legs finally caught up with the Beast in the third, as they would end up falling 6-2 to the Royals.

Andrew Johnston got things started off early on for the home team in the opening minutes of the first, flipping the puck over the glove of goaltender Trevor Cann at 3:56. Matt Hatch and Sean Wiles would add goals barely a minute apart shortly afterwards to put Reading up 3-0 by the end of the period, resulting in Grant Rollheiser starting the second frame for the Beast.

It was leading scorer Chad Painchaud and newly acquired winger David Ling who got things started for Brampton, just 1:40 into the second. As the pair entered the Royals zone on a 2-on-1, the initial Painchaud shot was stopped by Royals goalie Martin Ouellette, only to have David Ling bang in the rebound for his first goal in a Beast uniform. Painchaud would record his 200th career ECHL assist on the play, while alternate captain Jason Pitton would also also earn his 50th ECHL and 100th career professional assist.

It remained a two-goal deficit until the 12:03 mark of the period, when Jason Pitton again showed off his offensive awareness creating a turnover at the offensive blueline and coming in alone on the breakaway. The veteran scorer would hammer a shot on Ouellette that saw the goalie's momentum carry both himself and the puck over the goal line and into the back of the net for the sniper's team leading 12th goal of the year.

The Beast had momentum in their hands heading into the third, which statistically has been a good defensive period for the team this season. For the first half of the frame, that seemed to ring true, until the 10:47 mark when forward Adam Hughesman would bury his 12th of the year to open the floodgates for the Royals. Sean Wiles would add his second of the game on a tip-in play on the doorstep that Rollheiser never had a chance to stop and with under a minute left in the game, Kevin Walrod would seal the victory with his 4th of the year for a final score of 6-2.

In its entirety, the Beast end up splitting a difficult five-game road trip by collecting five out of a possible 10 points south of the border. The Beast now travel back home to Brampton for a well-deserved week of rest before opening up a three-game set against the Montreal Canadiens ECHL affiliate the Wheeling Nailers. The weekend series will once again see the Beast play three games in three nights from January 16-18. Friday's game will feature a Guns and Hoses theme, where the Brampton Fire and Police Departments will square off in a charity match to raise funds for Regen Brampton at 5:30, with puck drop for the Beast at 7:30. Saturday is Minor Hockey Day in Brampton, where local minor hockey teams will have the opportunity to play before the Beast game. Sunday is Beach Day at the Powerade Centre, where fans can have fun in the sun and participate a Paper Airplane Toss during the second intermission to win two FREE Flights ! Tickets can be purchased online at bramptonbeast.com or by calling 905-564-1684.
