Mavericks Unable to Best Americans' Gill in Goal

Kansas City Mavericks News Release
Allen, TX (January 11, 2014) - The Missouri Mavericks (14-17-2-2, 32 points) dropped their fifth straight game on Sunday falling to the Central Division leading Allen Americans (25-5-1-2, 53 points) by a 3-1 score. Missouri out-chanced the Americans and finished with 40 shots compared to Allen's 37 but could not beat hot goaltender, Riley Gill.
Missouri falls to 0-4-1 in their last five games and the Americans win for the sixth consecutive game. Allen leads the season series against Missouri winning all six match-ups thus far (Saturday's game was decided in overtime).
It was a defensive goaltending dual that saw Gill outlast Mike Clemente. Gill improves to 19-4-0-1 with his 39 saves, while Clemente certainly played well enough to win with a 34 save effort. The Mavs goalie falls to 6-10-0-1 on the season. Gill has won five in a row and nine of his last 10 decisions.
Despite dominating the scoring chances in the opening period, the Mavericks found themselves in a hole thanks to a re-direction by Rylan Schwartz in front of Clemente. The play started with defenseman Kevin Young skating around traffic and finding space where he blasted a shot that found Schwartz stick for the change of direction and the game's first goal. For Schwartz, it was his fifth goal of the season with Young and Jamie Schaafsma drawing the assists.
Missouri outshot Allen 16-13 in the first period but Gill was perfect for Allen.
The second period saw little offense, no goals and a steady parade to the penalty box as the teams rotated man advantages. Each squad finished the period with three power plays and each finished with blanks across the board as the defense, along with Gill for Allen and Clemente for Missouri, stood strong.
The Americans saw a great passing play build their lead as Chad Costello found Ian Schultz on the backdoor for a wide open net. Schultz has been hot for the Americans lately scoring his 14th goal of the season.
Late in the period, the Mavs would make a run with Patch Alber throwing a puck towards the net that founds its way through traffic and by Gill. For Alber, it was his first goal as a Maverick and it cut the lead to 2-1 but it was as close as the Mavericks would get.
With an empty-net in front of him, Jack Combs would stickhandle through some traffic and back hand a shot from the blue line into the open cage. For Combs, it was his team-best 22nd goal of the season.
Missouri plays their next home game on Saturday, January 17th at Independence Events Center when the Mavericks will welcome the legendary Hanson Brothers to the IEC! Find out how you can meet the Hanson Brother during a special VIP meet & greet event before the game on MissouriMavericks.com!
Single game tickets are available online at TicketMaster.com and in-person at the Silverstein Eye Centers Box Office at Independence Events Center.
