Rivermen Drop Matinee to RiverKings

PEORIA - The Peoria Rivermen could not overcome a three-goal deficit and fell to the Mississippi RiverKings 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at Carver Arena.

The RiverKings scored first with 12:22 showing on the opening period when Sean Jones found a bouncing rebound first in front of the right post and hacked it into the open net, assisted by Devin Mantha and Reid Campbell.

Mississippi took advantage of a turnover in the Peoria zone 3:55 into the second period on a high slot slap shot by Mike Hayward assisted by Matt Whitehead. Mantha won a race for the puck deep in the Rivermen zone and put in his own rebound on assists from Bryon Paulazzo and Campbell to put the RiverKings ahead 3-0 with 9:36 remaining before the second intermission. Alec Hagaman put the Rivermen on the board with a running wrister from the left circle with 7:19 left in the second period to cut the deficit to 3-1. Mississippi set the second intermission score at 4-1 in their favor with 1:51 remaining on a back door feed at the right post to Andrew Randazzo from Paulazzo.

The Rivermen quickly scored in the third period to cut the deficit to 4-2 just 2:52 into the stanza on a Garrett Vermeersch blast from the slot on a feed from behind the net by Dennis Sicard also assisted by Mike Gurtler. The Rivermen could not muster further offense, including with an extra attacker for the final 80 seconds, as they fell for the third time in the last four home games.

Peter Di Salvo stopped 33 Rivermen shots for the win while Eric Levine made 27 saves in the loss. Both teams were scoreless on two power plays.

The Rivermen fall to 16-9-2 and remain in third place in the Southern Professional Hockey League. The RiverKings improve to 13-14-2 and have won seven of their last 11 games while remaining in seventh place.

The Rivermen return to home ice for a three-game series on Friday, Saturday and Sunday of next weekend against the Louisiana IceGators. Game times are 7:05 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 3:05 p.m. Sunday. Saturday is Chicago Blackhawks Night with Blackhawks Ice Girls giving away thousands of dollars worth of merchandise, autographed items and tickets to lucky ticket-holders.
