Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

DUBUQUE, IA- Just one night after a five-game win streak came to a close, the Dubuque Fighting Saints got back on track Saturday. The Fighting Saints used two goals from Willie Knierim and Brett Boeing to top the Lincoln Stars 7-1 in front of a sold-out crowd of 3,263 Saturday Night at the Mystique Community Ice Center. The Saints have now won five straight contests at home, and the win Saturday helped Dubuque sweep the two-game season series with the Stars.

Knerim got Dubuque on the board early in the contest courtesy of a great puck movement on a power play. Only 5:07 into the game, Knierim capitalized with a deflection off a Keegan Ford shot. Knierim parked in front of Lincoln goaltender Peyton Jones and redirected the puck off the left post and into the net to make it 1-0 Dubuque.

Jacob Benson added to Dubuque's lead with just 13 seconds remaining in the first period. The forward scored his third goal of the weekend on a rebound. Seamus Malone carried the puck down the right wing and made a power move to the net. Jones stopped the shot, but the rebound sat loose in the crease for Benson who made it 2-0.

Dubuque would score three straight goals in the second period to take a large lead and chase Jones from the game. Gordie Green scored a beautiful wraparound goal, pulling Jones of out position, and knocking the puck into the vacated right side of the goal for his 8th goal of the season at 4:27.

Boeing would add to Dubuque's lead with a wrist shot off the crossbar and over Jones' glove at 5:13, and Knierim victimized new goaltender Cam Hackett for his second of the game at 11:20, cashing in off a rebound via the end boards.

After a Ludvig Hoff powerplay goal late in the second period, Dubuque responded with two more goals in the third period. Boeing scored his 17th of the season and second of the game at 3:22, collecting a pass from Dylan Gambrell in tight. His low shot beat Hackett under the pad to make it 6-1.

Evan Smith scored the game's final goal thanks to a beautiful pass from twin brother Mitchell. The twins rushed up ice on a two-on-one and Evan got the pass of the left wing and snapped a shot that beat Hackett short side to make it 7-1 at 10:25.

Dubuque outshot the Stars 35-30 in the game and got solid goaltending from Gavin Nieto in the victory. Nieto stopped 29 shots to improve his record to 5-1-0 on the season.

On Tuesday, the Fighting Saints host the 2015 USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game. The major event will bring future NHL stars to Dubuque to play in front of NHL scouts and executives from all 30 NHL teams. Three Fighting Saints, Dylan Gambrell, Seamus Malone and Blake Hillman will play in the game.
