Bridgeport Islanders News Release

ALBANY, N.Y. - Joe Whitney's power play goal early in the second period proved to be enough, as the Albany Devils skated past the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 3-1 on Saturday night at Times Union Center.

Whitney, who earned CCM AHL Player of the Week honors largely due to his performance against Bridgeport last weekend, notched his 10 th point against the Sound Tigers this season with his game-winning tally.

The Devils got on the board first thanks to David Wohlberg just 1:34 in. Paul Thompson, who like Whitney has played well against the Sound Tigers all year, fired a shot on net. Wohlberg collected the rebound and backhanded past Kevin Poulin to make it 1-0. It was Wohlberg's third goal of the year and Thompson's 12 th point this season against Bridgeport.

Two and a half minutes later, the Sound Tigers responded with a similar goal. After a shot by Sebastian Collberg found its way towards the net, Kael Mouillierat chipped the rebound home to tie the game at 1-1. Collberg and Colin McDonald earned assists on Mouillierat's 10 th of the season.

With the two teams playing very tight throughout the first, the Devils had a terrific scoring chance late in the frame. After Whitney picked the pocket of a Sound Tigers defenseman, he found a streaking Kelly Zajac who essentially had an open net to shoot at. Out of nowhere, Kevin Poulin stretched the right pad out and stoned Zajac to keep the score tied going into the first intermission.

It was then time for Whitney, who scored the game-winner with 2:27 gone in the second period. After one of the Sound Tigers best penalty killers Johan Sundstrom took a cross-checking penalty, Whitney took a pass from Thompson and fired a 40-footer that eluded all of the traffic in front and beat Poulin to make it 2-1. Whitney's 14 th on the year was all the Devils would need.

The Sound Tigers had few chances in the remaining 37 minutes of play, despite being credited with 19 shots in the final two frames. Stefan Matteau sealed the game on a two-on-none, collecting a rebound and stuffing it past Kevin Poulin to finish the scoring with a minute left in the game.

The Sound Tigers power play went scoreless, as Bridgeport went 0-for-4 with the man-advantage. Whitney's power play goal was the only one of the game, as Albany went 1-for-3 with the extra man.

Bridgeport hits the road again, traveling to Hartford to take on the Wolf Pack tomorrow. Puck drop is set for 3:00 p.m.

Notes: Colin McDonald now leads the Sound Tigers with 31 points in 31 games...Bridgeport traveled over four hours from Portland to Albany and now will travel about two hours to get to Hartford...This is the lowest scoring game between the two teams; they combined for 18 goals last weekend in two games at Webster Bank Arena.
