Amarillo Bulls News Release

HILDALGO, TX - Starts to games hadn't been an issue in the past 10 games for the Amarillo Bulls, but that all changed tonight (Friday) at State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, TX.

The Bulls surrendered two first-period goals including one in the first 85 seconds of play and dropped a 4-1 decision to the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees. The loss dropped the Bulls four points back of the Killer Bees for the sixth and final playoff spot in the South Division. The two teams will meet again on Saturday night.

Cody Gylling fired the lone Bulls' goal in the third period and Jacob Weatherly took the loss in goal. Weatherly played just the first period before being pulled for Anton Martinsson. Goaltender Nick Schmit had a confidence start in net making some key saves to prevent the Bulls from mounting any comeback bid.

For the first time in nearly a month the Amarillo Bulls had a slow start to the first period of play. The Killer Bees jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first 85 seconds when a knuckle ball shot from just inside the blue line eluded goaltender Jacob Weatherly. The Bulls pushed and had some solid hits but couldn't beat goaltender Nick Schmit. Near the end of the period, the Killer Bees added to their lead when they converted a 3-on-2 break up the ice. There were no penalties called and the Bulls outshot the Killer Bees 8-6.

There was no scoring in the second period but the Killer Bees had the shot lead 12-10. There was a late hit on forward Charlie Combs that led to a fight between Kyle Hartman and Dallas Gerads.

That altercation gave the Bulls an early three minute power play to start the third period. But the team failed to generate any scoring chances. The Killer Bees added two their lead with a goal midway through the stanza.

A later man advantage opportunity proved successful for the Bulls as Cody Gylling roofed a shot over the shoulder of Nick Schmit. Kasper Emanuelsson and Will Harrison earned assists on the play at the 14:10 mark.

The Bulls pulled their goaltender in the final 90 seconds to try and get closer. Luke Novak missed a deflection in front of the net and Charlie Combs wraparound attempt was denied by goaltender Nick Schmit. The Killer Bees rounded out the scoring with a goal in the last 25 seconds of the game.
