Des Moines Buccaneers News Release

(Urbandale, IA) The Des Moines Buccaneers are proud to announce that that Corey Schueneman has been named the United States Hockey League's Co-Defenseman of the Week. The third-year veteran scored two goals, was a plus three rating and was major factor in the Buccaneers yielding only eight goals over three games. His play was a part in guiding the Buccaneers to five out of a possible six points and moving back into third place in the Western Conference.

Scheneman scored the lone goal in the Bucs' 2-1 overtime loss at Fargo on December 31st and notched the third period game winner in Sunday's 4-3 comeback win over Youngstown. He also assisted on a goal in Saturday's 4-3 comeback win against Youngstown.

The 19 year old from Milford, MI is now on a five-game point streak matching a season high, and has recorded points in 10 of the last 11 games. He leads the league in goals for defenseman with eight and is second in defenseman points with 22, behind only teammate Alec Rauhauser's 24.

Schueneman joined the Bucs partway into the 2012-2013 season and is committed to Western Michigan University for next season. For his career he has played in 113 games with Des Moines collecting 56 points including 13 goals overall. This season has by far been his best offensively with eight goals eclipsing the total of six from the previous two seasons combined.

Thanks in part to Schueneman, the Buccaneers are 15-11-4 with 34pts and sit in third place in the Western Conference. While there are still 30 games remaining, Des Moines is one point clear of a postseason berth, which they are trying to obtain for the first time since 2006-2007.

Des Moines' is next in action Friday and Saturday night at sixth place Fargo before home games Friday January 16th and Saturday January 17th versus conference leading Sioux City.

The Des Moines Buccaneers are in their 35th anniversary season in the United States Hockey League. Since 1980, the Buccaneers have produced hundreds of NCAA Division I players and dozens of professional alumni.
