Ohio Machine News Release

COLUMBUS, OHIO (January 5, 2015) - The Ohio Machine has acquired All-Star defenseman Brian Karalunas in a trade with the Boston Cannons, team Vice President & Head Coach Bear Davis announced today. The Machine also received the Cannons' seventh round pick in the 2015 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft in exchange for defenseman Chad Wiedmaier and the fifth overall pick in this year's Collegiate Draft.

"The addition of a three-time All-Star is crucial to advancing the level of play of our defense," Davis said of Karalunas. "His ability to play both close defense and LSM is perfect when building a 19-man roster and he will also add a new dynamic to our wing play on face-offs."

Karalunas was originally drafted by the New York Lizards 35th overall in the 2011 Collegiate Draft and spent his entire MLL career in a Lizards uniform until being moved to Boston in a trade announced today. In four years in New York, Karalunas played in 53 games, two playoff games and three straight All-Star Games (2012-14). Since turning pro following a standout college career at Villanova University, Karalunas has never missed a game while posting six career points (all assists) and 135 career groundballs.

"Brian is a great teammate and will bring a veteran defensive presence to our locker room," Machine Associate Head Coach Tom Mariano said. "He is excellent on the defensive side of the ball in any situation and his ability to push transition will fit well with our style of play."

In exchange for Karalunas, the Machine sent Chad Wiedmaier and the fifth overall pick in the 2015 MLL Collegiate Draft to Boston. Wiedmaier played in 25 games for the Machine during the 2013 and 2014 seasons after being acquired in a trade with the Hamilton Nationals.

"We want to thank Chad for everything he did for the Machine organization in his two seasons in Ohio," Davis said. "Chad was a key component to our defense and helped us make the playoffs last season. We wish Chad nothing but success in Boston."

Season tickets for the Machine's 2015 season are now on sale and range from General Admission at $92 to a Field Level Box at $2,400 and include seven regular season home games plus a 2015 MLL playoff game.
