Generals Get by Hounds

Soo Greyhounds News Release

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON- Heading into the weekend, Head Coach Sheldon Keefe called it a daunting task. And less than twenty four hours after an offensive output against Ottawa, the Hounds would face the CHL's best in the Oshawa Generals and he would reiterate the same.

After a tied first period of play, the Hounds surrendered five unanswered goals that built up a 5-1 Generals lead before an eventual 6-4 final.

"At the end of the day, today our roster we iced is the youngest roster in the league playing against the #1 team in the country so it's a daunting task from that end of it and we saw the results" began Keefe.

"I would have liked to have seen more from the guys (older guys) we did have in terms of finding their way through the pressure, to generate more offence. They (Oshawa) make it very hard on your it's not easy" he continued.

An already undermanned Soo squad would head into the game one forward short after HAYDEN VERBEEK became ill and would be a late scratch.

Keefe eluded to a number of players feeling under the weather as TIM GETTINGER has missed all week, and despite injured, TYLER GANLY is feeling the same.

It would be the home side opening the scoring on their first shot of the game.

GABE GUERTLER turned and fired while in the slot, notching his 20th goal of the year and giving the Hounds a 1-0 lead 1:48 into the first period.

BORIS KATCHOUK and DAVID MILLER had assists on the play.

The Hound would kill of their first two shorthanded situations before Oshawa would later score.

Tobias Lindberg pulled Oshawa on even terms at 13:43 converting on a back and fourth play, while the Generals odd-man rush broke in close to leave the two sides even after twenty minutes.

Starting the second period shorthanded for forty-five seconds, the Hounds would make it 3-for-3 on the penalty-kill early.

Just under five minutes into the period both BORIS KATCHOUK and KEIGAN GOETZ stared down opportunities in front of the goal but the game would remain tied.

And while weathering the shorthanded situations earlier in the game, the Hounds saw Oshawa's league-leading power play break the game open with two goals in under two minutes.

Michael Dal Colle notched goals at 8:45 and 10:38 giving Oshawa a 3-1 lead.

The lead extended to 5-1 for the visitors when Tobias Lindberg and Chris Carlisle converted capping off a four goal period for the Generals.

KYLE JENKINS brought the Essar Centre to life and sparked the Hounds with a goal in the final minute when his point show beat Ken Appleby with 48 seconds to go in the second period. Assisted by KATCHOUK and GOETZ.

Hounds trailed 5-2 after forty minutes.

Skating in the final twenty minutes the Hounds saw the visitors with just a single shot through the opening nine minutes, and four in the period overall.

Offensively the Hounds scored twice more, book-ending a single Oshawa tally.

DAVID MILLER made it a two goal deficit (3-5) shooting through a screen high blocker side at 7:40 while skating 4-on-4 and BRYAN MOORE finished off a three-way passing play with JARED MCCANN and BLAKE SPEERS at 19:22 while on a 5-on-3 advantage.

Cole Cassels had Oshawa's lone period goal in the 6-4 Generals victory.

The loss would be just the second during regulation on home ice for the Hounds, with their record falling to 27-9-0-2 on the year overall.

"I thought our guys worked hard. I thought our guys worked, I saw a lot of competitiveness from our guys and I thought Jared McCann played as hard as he has all season" said Keefe.

"Those kind of things, those kind of efforts stand out to me, now it's just a matter of playing the way we want to play, and make plays under that type of environment, that type of pressure. That's an adjustment, that takes time and it's even harder when your short-staffed" he concluded.
