Tri-City Americans News Release
Kent, WA- The Tri-City Americans (18-17-0-2, 38 pts) tried to bounce back from the New Year's Eve loss, but came up just short against the Seattle Thunderbirds (19-15-2-2, 42 pts) 3-2 in a shootout in front of a crowd of 4,744 at the ShoWare Center on Friday night.
Each team tried to implement its game plan to gain the lead in the first, with Seattle leading the shots 5-3 in the first period. Neither team was able to find a goal in the first period.
In the second, the Americans had the shot advantage, 12-11, but the Thunderbirds scored first. Late in the period, Donovan Neuls scored on the power play to give Seattle a 1-0 lead after two periods.
Tri-City was able to tie the game early in the period, as Lucas Nickles fired a shot from the right faceoff circle that beat Taran Kozun. Midway through the period, the Thunderbirds retook the lead, as Nolan Volcan fired a shot from the slot into the net to make it 2-1 Seattle. But Nickles was able to tie the game with his second goal late in the third, knotting the game at two after regulation. Neither team could score in overtime, which led to a shootout.
In the shootout, Lane Pederson shot first and scored, putting the Thunderbirds ahead 1-0. Misses from Brian Williams and Ty Comrie set up Donovan Neuls for the winning shootout goal, which he buried to give Seattle the two points.
The Americans weren't able to score on three chances with the man advantage and recorded 26 penalty minutes, while the Thunderbirds were 1-of-2 on the power play and had 18 penalty minutes.
Evan Sarthou made 25 saves in the loss, while Taran Kozun stopped 24 shots in the win.
Tri-City will travel south on I-5 for a meeting with the Portland Winterhawks (19-17-0-3, 41 pts) at Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Saturday, Jan. 3. Game time is at 7 p.m. Tri-City lost the last meeting in Kennewick, 4-3, and has not faced the Winterhawks in Portland this season.
