Spirit Take Down Greyhounds 5-3

The Saginaw Spirit played host to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds for a late Sunday game at the Dow Event Center, taking a 4-3 victory over the West Division rival.

Saginaw's Kris Bennett gave the Sunday night Spirit crowd something to cheer for early in the first period after he fired home his 4th goal of the season off a pass from Connor Brown at the 2:05 mark. Devon Paliani was also credited with an assist on the play. The referee's sent Sault Ste. Marie's Keigan Goetz to the box for tripping midway through the period and Saginaw sent the power play unit to the ice. Jacob Ringuette made it a 2-0 game at 10:04 of the period, scoring his 4th goal of the season with the help of Devon Paliani and Artem Artemov. The Spirit turned on some offensive flair and Saginaw's captain Nick Moutrey netted his 15th goal of the season and put the score to 3-0 over the Greyhounds. Sault Ste. Marie netted a late first period goal and opened up the scoring thanks to Jared McCann at 17:04, digging into the Spirit lead and making it a 3-1 game. Blake Speers and Zach Senyshyn assisted the play. The Greyhounds had multiple scoring opportunities that were stopped by Saginaw's Jake Paterson, putting 12 shots total on the Spirit's starting goaltender. The Spirit finished the period with 10 shots on goal.

The Saginaw Spirit and Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds exchanged goals throughout the second period. Dylan Sadowy scored his 20th goal of the season and put the Spirit 4-1 over the Greyhounds at 10:01 of the period. Tye Felhaber took the lone assist on the play. Sault Ste. Marie retaliated not even a minute later and sliced the score in half off the stick of Mac Hollowell at the 10:54 mark, making it a 4-2 game. The Spirit and Greyhounds headed to the locker room after the second with Sault Ste. Marie outshooting Saginaw 14-10.

The Spirit held off the Greyhounds until the midway point of the third period. Jared McCann put home his second goal of the night at the 9:13 mark, with the lone assist coming from Kyle Jenkins. The Greyhounds pulled their starting goaltender Joseph Raaymakers in hopes of tying the game late in the period, but Saginaw's Kris Bennett reinstated the Spirit's two-goal lead and slid in an unassisted goal on Sault Ste. Marie's empty net for the game winner, leading to a 5-3 victory over the Greyhounds. Final shots read Sault Ste. Marie 36, Saginaw 29.

The Saginaw Spirit will travel to the Essar Centre to take on the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds before the New Year on Tuesday, December 30th at 7:07 p.m.
