December 21, 2014 - Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL) News Release

Whalers Win Weekend Series Over Wolves with 6-3 Victory

Submitted by Jay Harris

Tonight's game was last of a 3-game stretch between the Watertown Wolves and the Danbury Whalers. The teams came into this game splitting the series at 1 each.

It looked like Danbury would get the first goal, but crossbar behind Jesse Chenard would deny them that goal. Watertown's Justin MacDonald would end up making the first goal of the night 16 minutes into the period on assists from Phil Bronner and Craig Cole. Phil Bronner would extend the lead 90 seconds later on a power play goal with assists from Justin MacDonlad and Ben Schoenebrger. Danbury looked to close the gap, but Chenard would make a great sliding save to keep the puck out of the net. The period would end with Watertown leading the shot count 13-4 with the score being 2-0.

The Whalers would come back in the second period with a vengeance. Ryan Patsch scored just over 2 minutes into the period with assistance from Brett Liscomb. Frank Schumacher would tie the game up on an unassisted goal 9 minutes into the period. Danbury would take the lead 15 minutes into the period with Ian DeLong assisting Ilya Solarev with the goal. The Wolves would take a pause expecting a whistle that created the opportunity for Ian DeLong to extend their lead at 16 minutes with an unassisted goal. Tempers boiled over when a fight broke out between Watertown's Matt Wray and Danbury's Julian Fraser. Danbury outshot Watertown 17-5 and the period ended with the score at 2-4 in favor of the Whalers.

The 3rd period would start with a power play goal by David Lun extending Danbury's lead 2-5. Chenard would come out of the goal for Jo St. Pierre to play the rest of the game. Fraser would see a second fight this evening as he sparred with Phil Bronner. Jordan Ciccarello would get an assist from Ian DeLong to extend the Danbury lead 2-6. Watertown was not done just yet. Justin MacDonald would get assistance from Phil Bronner and Colby Spooner to close the gap 3-6 at the 9-minute mark. Danbury would get the upper hand this meeting and take home the win. Ryan Patsch of Danbury would take home the first star of the game. Whaler Ian Delong got the second star and Justin MacDonald for Watertown got the 3rd star.

The Watertown Wolves will be back in action at the Watertown Municipal Arena on Friday, December 26th to take on the Steel City Warriors. The puck will drop at 7:35.
