Allen Americans News Release
Allen, Texas - The Allen Americans took on the Wichita Thunder Friday night at the Allen Event Center and the crowd of 4,235 hockey fans was treated to a tight game that went to overtime to decide the game.
Wichita got on the board first when Ian Lowe fired a one-timer past Aaron Dell just 46 seconds into the opening frame with assists from Ian Duval and Kenton Miller. It would be the only marker in a low shooting period that saw Allen outshoot Wichita by a count of 9-5.
The Americans brought the game level past the midway point of the second period when Chad Costello jammed the puck past Tim Boron, assisted by Jack Combs and Ian Schultz at the 12:24 mark. Allen again outshot Wichita 12-10 for a two period total of 21-15.
A hard fought third period saw the score remain unchanged with Allen displaying one of their best penalty kills of the year, holding the Thunder at bay during a five minute power play with two of those having Wichita playing five-on-three hockey due to an extra minor. Wichita bested Allen in shots for the final period at 9-6 but still trailed Allen 27-24 after three periods of hockey.
The overtime was a short one as Kenton Miller lit the lamp just 51 seconds in to give Wichita the victory; assists on the Miller goal were credited to Eric Meland and Theo Peckham. The Americans stand at 16-4-1-1 after the overtime loss, improving to 34 points and remaining in second place in the Western Conference.
The Allen Americans are back in action Saturday night as they take on the Tulsa Oilers at 7:05 PM CST.
