'Tips Fall in Low-Scoring Affair vs. Giants
December 17, 2014 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Everett Silvertips News Release
VANCOUVER, BC - The Everett Silvertips were thwarted offensively for most of the night as the Vancouver Giants rode an early lead to a 2-1 victory Tuesday night at Pacific Coliseum. The season series between the clubs is now even at one game apiece with another meeting set for December 27 upon the return from the holiday break. The 'Tips play one more game before the break Wednesday at home vs. Victoria.
Nikita Scherbak scored the lone goal for the Silvertips off assists from Kohl Bauml and Remi Laurencelle with 7:11 remaining. The 'Tips outshot Vancouver 9-2 in the third period and 25-21 overall, but could not finish the rally from 2-0 down after the first period.
The teams combined for only 12 shots in the first 20 minutes, but Vancouver scored a pair of goals to take the lead. Shortly after Nikita Scherbak hit the post and then had another scoring chance, the Giants scored off the rush as Carter Popoff drove the outside lane and then dished to the goal mouth for a tap-in by Tyler Benson. The 'Tips killed off a Vancouver powerplay later in the period, but Popoff circled out of the corner into the high slot before sending a low shot through traffic past a screened Carter Hart with 51 seconds left in the first.
Austin Lotz came into the game and Everett started strong in the second period, building an early 6-1 shot edge and coming close to getting on the board. Vancouver turned the tide later in the period though to outshoot the 'Tips 13-10 as the score remained unchanged despite a powerplay for each side.
The Silvertips finally broke Cody Porter's shutout off the rush at 12:49 of the third period as Nikita Scherbak received a saucer pass across the slot from Kohl Bauml and ripped it just inside the post to get Everett back within one. One more powerplay chance and a late flurry with the net empty did not result in a game-tying goal as the 'Tips fell 2-1.
Carter Hart (5-3-2-0) took the loss after four saves on six shots in the first period, while Austin Lotz stopped all 15 shots he faced over the last two periods. Cody Porter (5-6-0-0) made 24 saves in the win for Vancouver. Both teams finished 0 for 3 on the powerplay.
The Silvertips will now return home to host the Victoria Royals Wednesday night in their final game before the WHL holiday break. Opening faceoff is set for 7:05 pm, and don't forget to join us for Midweek Madness featuring 2-for-1 lower-level tickets and great food and drink specials throughout the game.
