Giants Edge Silvertips for Seventh Consecutive Victory

December 17, 2014 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Vancouver Giants News Release

Carter Popoff scored the game winning goal in the final minute of the first period as the Vancouver Giants skated to their seventh straight win on Tuesday night, sneaking past the Everett Silvertips 2-1 at the Pacific Coliseum. Tyler Benson had Vancouver's other goal as the G-Men enter the Christmas break with a 16-18-0-0 record.

Benson opened the scoring just before the midway mark, tipping a centring feed from Popoff past Everett goalie Carter Hart for his seventh goal of the season. Popoff netted the eventual winner with 52 seconds left in the opening frame, wiring a wrister past Hart from the high slot.

Austin Lotz replaced Hart in the Everett goal after the first period of play, and neither side scored in the middle frame. Montreal Canadiens prospect Nikita Scherbak put the Silvertips on the board in the third period when he scored with a hard shot from the right circle, but Giants goalie Cody Porter shut the door in the late stages, stopping 24 of 25 shots on the night to pick up the victory.

The Giants will return to action on December 27th when they visit the Silvertips. Face-off is set for 7:05pm. Vancouver's next home game is on Sunday, December 28th when the Seattle Thunderbirds visit the Rink on Renfrew. The puck will drop at 2:00pm.
