15 New York Red Bulls Academy Players Earn Ncaa Division I Conference Awards

HARRISON, N.J. (December 15, 2014) - Fifteen members of the New York Red Bulls Academy have been recognized with NCAA Division I all-conference awards for the 2014 season, including 14 players that carry a homegrown tag with the organization. The players, who remain a part of the Red Bulls organization and train with the U-23 team, represent nine NCAA conferences, and 16 institutions.

Amidst all of the post season honors, conference awards are determined by voting among the conference coaches. Players named to all-conference teams were awarded the honor by a group of coaches who spent the most time scouting and preparing for them as conference rivals.

Leading the list is Sean Davis, senior captain of the Duke Blue Devils who signed with the Red Bulls last week as a homegrown player. Davis was named the ACC Midfielder of the Year and also received first team All-ACC accolades.

Also highlighting the list is senior Brandon Adler, who led Providence to an NCAA Final Four appearance over the weekend.

In addition to the players listed below, two members of the Red Bulls Academy, junior Scott Thomsen and freshman Nate Odusote, won the NCAA College Cup with the University of Virginia Cavaliers.

Thomsen, a junior, has appeared in all 22 of the Cavalier's games this season, making 21 starts both on the backline and in midfield. He went the full 110 minutes in the shootout win over UCLA in the championship game. The Brick, N.J., native scored one goal and had a team-high eight assists this season. Thomsen most recently competed for RBNY as part of the U-23 team that saw action in the Lamar Hunt Open Cup last summer. He also won the NPSL championship with the U-23s in August at Red Bull Arena.

Odusote, a freshman defender, saw action in six games for UVA this season. Odusote, born in London, lives in North Haledon, N.J., and won three Northeast Division championships as part of the Red Bulls academy.

Class of 2015

Sean Davis - Duke

Davis (Holmdel, N.J.) earned ACC Midfielder of the Year and First Team All-ACC honors. Davis led All ACC players and ranked third nationally with a career-high 10 assists. Davis completed his senior campaign with 12 points to rank second on the team in scoring. He is a three-time all-ACC pick, earning second team honors as a sophomore and junior and was a preseason first team All-America choice in 2014.

Brandon Adler - Providence

Brandon Adler (Montville, N.J.) started 19 of the 20 games he played for the Friars, registering four shots. He has been a key component in the Friars' defense, helping the team record eight shutouts on the season. Adler was a big part of the team's run to the NCAA semifinals, where they fell to UCLA in double overtime.

Class of 2016

Mael Corboz - Maryland

Corboz (Green Brook, N.J.) earned 2014 Big Ten First Team accolades. Corboz had a solid first season for Maryland, registering a team-best nine goals in his first season after transferring from Rutgers. His 21 points are more than double any other Terrapin for 2014. The midfielder boasts four game-winning goals as well.

Brandon Allen - Georgetown

Allen was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team after another impressive campaign. He led the Hoyas in scoring with 11 goals and three assists for 25 points on the year. This includes three game winners and a mark of 3-3 on penalty kicks. He ranked first in the BIG EAST Conference in goals and second in points as well as first in goals per game.

Chris Thorsheim - Bucknell

Chris Thorsheim (Manalapan, N.J.) earned an All-Patriot League nod for the third straight year. He was a Second Team choice as a freshman in 2012, and now he has made the First Team in each of the last two seasons. Thorsheim is one of the league's premier center midfielders, and this season he has three goals and five assists in 18 games. He recorded a goal and an assist in Bucknell's 2-1 overtime win over Army, and he also had a goal and an assist against Howard.

Antonio Matarazzo - Columbia

Matarazzo (Fair Lawn, N.J.) earns All-Ivy League honorable mention for the second time in his career, having first earned the award in his first-year of 2012. The 6-4 center back and midfielder was known for his ball control, as well as his use in set-pieces, boasting a powerful left leg. In 2014, the junior scored a game-winning goal against Yale, helping him to earn Ivy League Co-Player of the week. Matarazzo was also the team leader in assists, adding three helpers on the season.

Joe Farrell - LaSalle

Joe Farrell (Blue Bell, Pa.) was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Second Team. Farrell paced the Explorers in goals (7), assists (4), and points (18) this season, and finished in the top ten in the Atlantic 10 in goals and points. The Blue Bell, Pa. native started 18 games for the Blue and Gold this season, and scored game-winning goals in 1-0 wins over Saint Joseph's and Bucknell. Farrell also assisted game-winning goals in victories over Stetson and Manhattan.

Class of 2017

Alex Muyl - Georgetown

Sophomore Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y.) made the All-BIG EAST Second Team. He finished second on the team in scoring with two goals and a team-high six assists. He appeared in all 17 games he was available for this season with 14 starts. As a sophomore, he is knocking on the door of the career scoring list with 27 points. He was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Sept. 22.

Adam Najem - Akron

Najem (Clifton, N.J.) earned All-MAC First Team honors after starting all 21 games for Akron this season, registering a team-highs in goals (14), points (32), and game-winning goals (4), while ranking second in assists (4) and shots (39).

Class of 2018

Arun Basuljevic - Georgetown

Freshman midfielder Arun Basuljevic was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year and a unanimous selection to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Squad. Basuljevic is Georgetown's third-leading scorer with four goals in 17 games with nine starts to his credit. He has a team-best three game winners on the season including two in BIG EAST Conference play to tie him for first in the league.

Chris Lema - Georgetown

Freshman midfielder Christopher Lema (Ridgefield, N.J.) joined teammate and academy cohort Basuljevic on the BIG EAST All-Rookie squad. Lema appeared in 17 games with six starts for the Hoyas and managed an assist in the draw with then-No. 9 UC-Irvine.

Alexander Tejera - Siena

Tejera (Ossining, N.Y.) was named to the MAAC All-Rookie team as well as the Second Team All-Conference. He led the Saints in points (15), goals (six) and game-winning goals (three). A two-time MAAC Rookie of the Week, he led all conference freshmen in game-winning goals while ranking second in both points and goals.

Anthony Viteri - St. John's

Anthony Viteri (Flushing, N.Y.) earned BIG EAST All-Rookie Team honors for the Red Storm. Viteri finished with one goal, a game-winner, and one assist in his freshman campaign. The midfielder played in 16 games, including 14 starts. Viteri scored the golden goal in the 104th minute of a 3-2 double overtime win against Butler (Oct. 4) for his first-career goal. The midfielder collected his first-career point with an assist on the game-winner in a 3-1 win against Connecticut (Sept. 23).

Billy Stevens - Michigan

Billy Stevens (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) was named to the Big Ten All-Rookie Team. Stevens immediately asserted himself as one of the top on-ball defenders in the Big Ten during his freshman campaign, starting all 17 matches he appeared in and playing the entire match on 15 occasions. Stevens played the most minutes of any freshman on the squad this season, and he will return to U-M next season to anchor the Wolverine defense.

Harrison Steadman - Charlotte

Steadman (Kinnelon, N.J.) was named to the Conference USA All-Rookie Team. The forward made 18 appearances for the 49ers in his freshman campaign, contributing four goals and two assists. His 10 points tied him for fifth-most on the team.

This group represents more than 30 players with ties to the Red Bulls academy currently playing collegiate soccer. Many of the names listed above will return to train with the Red Bulls U-23 team over winter break, and will compete for the U-23s, led by coach Simon Nee, next summer.
