Tigers' Cole Sanford Named Denny's WHL Player of the Week

CALGARY, AB - The Western Hockey League announced today that Medicine Hat Tigers forward Cole Sanford is the Denny's WHL Player of the Week for the week ending December 14th, 2014.

Sanford notched eight points (4g-4a), while posting a plus-four rating in three games over the past week as the Tigers posted a 2-1-0-0 record in that span. On Tuesday, December 9th, Sanford potted the insurance marker and set up another in a 4-1 victory over the host Kootenay Ice. On Friday, December 12th, he recorded one goal and was selected as the game's second star in a 4-2 setback to the visiting Kelowna Rockets. Sanford finished the week by netting five points (2g-3a) while earning second star honours in a 7-4 triumph over the visiting Prince Albert Raiders on Saturday.

Sanford, a 19-year-old Vernon, B.C. product, has tallied 49 points (23g-26a) along with a plus-22 rating in 33 games so far this season. Sanford currently sits tied with teammate Trevor Cox for third place in league scoring and his 23 goals are good for second in the WHL. The 5'8", 165 lb. forward is in his third season in the WHL with the Tigers where he has amassed 133 points (58g-75a) in 158 career regular season contests.

The WHL has also nominated Jordan Papirny of the Brandon Wheat Kings for the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week award. Papirny, an 18-year-old from Edmonton, AB, registered a 1.00 goals-against average and a .963 save percentage in two starts this past week. On Friday, December 12th, Papirny turned aside 29 of 31 shots and was named the game's third star as the Wheat Kings prevailed 4-2 over the visiting Swift Current Broncos. On Sunday, December 14th, Papirny made 23 saves to post his second shutout of the season while also claiming third star honours as the Wheat Kings blanked the visiting Red Deer Rebels 4-0. Papirny leads all goalies this year with 21 victories. Now in his third WHL campaign with the Brandon Wheat Kings, Papirny has posted a 44-22-6-3 record with three shutouts in 78 career regular season appearances. He is eligible for the 2015 NHL Draft.
