Buffalo Bisons News Release

Former Buffalo Bisons OF MARK GILBERT was confirmed late Friday afternoon by the United States Senate as the new U.S. Ambassador to New Zealand.

Gilbert, 58, played 119 games with the Bisons during the 1985 season, the club's first year back at the Triple-A level. The switch-hitting outfielder posted a .266 (114-428) average with 20 doubles, three home runs, 33 RBI and 14 stolen bases. He also finished second on the club with 67 runs scored.

Gilbert also played seven games for the Bisons' Major League parent club, the Chicago White Sox, during the 1985 season. He hit .273 (6-22) with a double and three RBI. He is the first former Major League player to become a fully credentialed U.S. Ambassador to a foreign country.

The 1985 season was Gilbert's final year in baseball as he had knee surgery the following year. He pursued a career in Florida as a stockbroker before being named the Democratic National Committee's deputy national finance chair from 2009 until 2013. He was nominated by President Barrack Obama for the ambassador position in October of 2013.
