Royals Escape with Second Straight Two-Goal Win

December 13, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release

READING, PA- The Wheeling Nailers threw everything they had at the Reading Royals' net on Saturday night. Derek Army lit the lamp in the first period, but unfortunately, Martin Ouellette was unable to be solved after that goal. Reading tallied once in the second and once in the third, coming away with its second straight one-goal win, defeating the Nailers, 2-1 at Santander Arena.

The Nailers scored the lone goal during the first period, lighting the lamp at the 7:39 mark. Jarrett Burton won an offensive zone face-off back to Bobby Shea at the left point. Shea spun around a defender, freeing up space to toss the puck into a traffic jam in front of the net. Burton and Derek Army both took swings at the loose biscuit, with Army's smack ultimately propelling Wheeling into the lead.

The defensive battle continued in the second period, but the game became tied, as Reading drew even. With 11:24 left in the frame, the Royals won a puck battle behind the goal, with Brandon Alderson centering a pass to Andrew Johnston, who connected on a one-timer from the right side of the slot for the equalizer.

The final frame also featured only one goal, and unfortunately for the Nailers, it went the other way. Martin Ouellette kicked out a save off of a Wheeling shot, leading to a rush in the opposite direction. Brandon Alderson dropped a pass off in the slot for Ryan Cruthers, who slipped a shot through Eric Hartzell's legs. Despite a 13-shot third period, Wheeling was unable to draw even, as the Royals held on for the 2-1 win.

Martin Ouellette shined in goal for Reading, stopping 40 of the 41 shots he faced for the win. Eric Hartzell turned in a strong performance for Wheeling, but came up on the short end, despite 21 saves on 23 shots.

The Nailers and Royals will play the finale of their three-game series on Sunday afternoon in Wheeling at 5:05.
