Manchester Monarchs News Release

WORCESTER, MA - Andrew Bodnarchuk broke a 1-1 tie with a breakaway goal in the third period, lifting the Monarchs to a 2-1 win over Worcester on Saturday night at the DCU Center. The win extended Manchester's winning streak to four straight games.

Manchester improved to 17-5-1-1 on the season overall and it has won each of its first three games this season against the Sharks (10-12-2-0).

The Monarchs surrendered the first goal of the game for the second straight night when Freddie Hamilton beat J.F. Berube 1:02 into the game.

David Van der Gulik knotted the score at 1-1 when he tallied his fifth goal of the season just before the opening period ended. The goal came on the power play at 19:10.

Neither team scored in the second period, with Manchester outshooting the Sharks 10-6 in the frame.

Bodnarchuk was called for holding and unsportsmanlike conduct early in the third period, but the Monarchs killed off the four-minute penalty.

When his penalties expired, Bodnarchuk was hit with a pass from Brian O'Neill in the neutral zone that led to a clean breakaway. He went five-hole on Troy Grosenick for the game-winner.

The Monarchs head to Providence next for a 3 p.m. game against the Bruins tomorrow. The team returns to the Verizon Wireless Arena on Dec. 19 with a 7 p.m. matchup against the Sharks.

Notes:

Manchester held the Sharks scoreless in nine power play opportunities and limited them to 15 shots in the game. Zach O'Brien's goal streak ended at four games, but he picked up an assist on David Van der Gulik's goal. Over his last five games, he has four goals and three assists. J.F. Berube (14 saves) lowered his goals against average to 1.94 on the season. He has allowed two goals or less in each of his last four straight games.
