North Bay Battalion News Release

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. - Mike Amadio scored two goals and goaltender Jake Smith recorded the shutout as the North Bay Battalion blanked the Mississauga Steelheads 5-0 Friday night, snapping a four-game Ontario Hockey League losing streak.

Alex Henriksson and Brett McKenzie had one goal and one assist each, Mike Baird also scored and Kyle Wood provided three assists for the Battalion, which hadn't won since a 4-2 decision Nov. 30 over the visiting Niagara IceDogs. Smith, who backstopped the Troops to a 3-0 win at Mississauga on Oct. 31, made 28 saves in his third shutout of the season.

North Bay moved its won-lost-extended record to 15-8-6 for 36 points, first in the Central Division.

Mississauga, which lost for the first time in three games, is 13-14-1 for 27 points, third in the division. Goaltender Spencer Martin allowed four goals on 14 shots before giving way to Cameron Zanussi, who faced nine shots before a Hershey Centre crowd announced as 1,925.

Amadio struck first on the power play at 4:09 of the first period, beating Martin low to the stick side from the right-wing circle. Wood and Brenden Miller had the assists.

Baird scored his third goal of the season at 18:27, slipping alone into the slot, collecting the puck from a Wood feed off the right skate and squeezing the disc between Martin's pads. Ray Huether claimed the second assist.

Mississauga, outshot 9-5, had its best scoring chance in the 11th minute, but Lucas Venuto failed to put a Josh Burnside pass into an open net with Smith out of position. Smith made a solid stop on a Nathan Bastian attempt from the deep slot in the 16th minute.

Amadio made it 3-0 with a shorthanded goal at 5:17 of the second period. Marcus McIvor bought time in the left-wing corner and fed Amadio, who stepped to the centre off the left side and beat Martin. The goal, the Troops' first shorthanded score this season, was Amadio's 14th.

Henriksson's eighth goal sent Martin to the bench at 10:11. McKenzie drove down the right wing around Justin Bean and fired a shot that Martin stopped with his right pad before Henriksson converted the rebound.

McKenzie beat Zanussi at 13:57, putting a low wrister to the far side from the left circle. Henriksson and Miles Liberati assisted on McKenzie's third goal of the season, his first at even strength.

Smith was rarely tested in the period but produced two saves on Bryson Cianfrone and turned aside a Venuto shot off the right wing in the last minute.

Mississauga outshot the Battalion 12-4 in the scoreless third frame. Smith denied Venuto in the sixth minute and Sean Day at the left post on the power play in the 10th. Smith scrambled in the crease in the 12th minute when Damian Bourne whacked at the rebound of a Jared Walsh drive from the right point.

There were two fights. Baird and Cody Thompson staged a second-period slugfest 27 seconds after McKenzie's goal, and Riley Bruce and Mississauga's Nick Zottl exchanged punches early in the third period.

The Battalion, 3-1-0 against Mississauga this season, hosts the Kingston Frontenacs at 2 p.m. Sunday.
