Reign Rally But Fall to Condors in Shootout 3-2
December 12, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Ontario Reign News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Ontario Reign (12-8-1-3), four-time Pacific Division Champions and proud affiliate of the NHL's 2014 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings and Winnipeg Jets, fell in the shootout to the Bakersfield Condors (13-9-1-2) by a 3-2 score in front of a crowd of 3,869 on Thursday night at Rabobank Arena.
Bakersfield jumped out to a lead off a power-play goal from Chase Schaber at 11:09 of the first period, assisted by C.J. Ludwig and Brendan Brooks.
The Condors continued to hound Ontario with the man advantage in the second period, when Sebastien Sylvestre lit the lamp at 8:37, assisted by Jonathan Lessard and Nick Pageau.
The Reign answered shortly after Sylvestre's goal, as Maxim Kitsyn took a pass from Nolan Julseth-White and snapped a shot from the right circle that beat Ty Rimmer and banked in off the far post at 9:25. Jussi Olkinuora provided the secondary assist.
In the third period, Ontario finally broke through on the power-play, when Tyler Scofield fed a pass from the right corner to Kitsyn in the slot. Kitsyn then blasted a one-timer past the glove of Rimmer at 11:27, with Judd Blackwater getting the additional helper.
Kitsyn's goal would force overtime, but the Reign were unable to capitalize on a late power-play opportunity in the extra session, so the match would continue into the shootout.
The Condors would take a 2-0 lead in the shootout, before Matt White solved Rimmer, and Olkinuora robbed Connor Jones with a glove save. Kitsyn would be called upon in the fifth round to keep Ontario alive, but he was denied by Rimmer to end the game in favor of Bakersfield.
Olkinuora took the shootout loss with 30 saves; Rimmer picked up the win with 21 stops.
Three Stars:
1. BAK - Sebastien Sylvestre
2. BAK - Chase Schaber
3. BAK - C.J. Ludwig
