Steelheads Preview: December 12 - 14

December 11, 2014 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Mississauga Steelheads News Release

With a decisive road victory in Sudbury on Sunday, the Mississauga Steelheads improved to a .500 win percentage on the season.

The Trout had a successful weekend overall, winning two of three games. After dropping the first game to the Barrie Colts, they won at home against the Plymouth Whalers Friday and continued to roll scoring five goals in Sudbury. The Steelheads have now won four of their last five games, and four straight at home.

This weekend, Mississauga plays three games in as many days. North Bay will visit the Hershey Centre Friday; Mississauga will travel to Owen Sound Saturday, and return home to cap the weekend off against the Barrie Colts.

At the midway point of the season series with the Battalion, the Trout are 1-1 against the Troops in North Bay. Come Friday, they look to improve to the same record at home. On Halloween, North Bay took the first meeting in Mississauga by a score of 3-0, as Jake Smith earned his first shutout of the season.

Mississauga will make their lone trip to Owen Sound on Saturday to play the first of two games against the Attack this season. Since the departure of Brandon Hope, there has been a tale of two goaltenders in Owen Sound. Jack Flinn has had very pedestrian stats in his three OHL seasons, and has just one win in his last eight starts. Rookie Michael McNiven on the other hand, has seven wins in his only eight starts. McNiven looks to be earning the number one spot, sporting an impressive 1.49 goals against average and a .953 save percentage. As both teams see action on Friday night, it will be interesting to see which goalies get the nod for this one.

On Sunday, the Barrie Colts will be in Mississauga for matinee matchup. The Steelheads will be looking for a little revenge, as their only loss last weekend was in Barrie. Mississauga visited Barrie for their Teddy Bear Toss game, and it seems only fitting that the Colts return the favour. Sunday, Steelheads fans will delight in the opportunity to litter the ice for the Teddy Bear Toss, presented by Canadian Tire . The Steelheads can move ahead of the Colts in the Central Division standings this weekend, but the Colts will have a game in hand.
