Hamilton Bulldogs News Release
HAMILTON, ONT. - Hamilton Bulldogs Hockey Club Owner and Bulldogs Foundation Chairman Michael Andlauer announced today that the Foundation will once again contribute $125,000 to 20 Hamilton area high-needs schools for its Dawgs Breakfast Program this school year.
"With the help of the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) and Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board (HWCDSB), we have determined 20 schools that will be the beneficiaries of this year's Dawgs Breakfast Program funding," said Andlauer. "There are families in our community that are still living at or below the poverty line and, in some cases, a school breakfast or snack program may be a child's only meal of the day. It is extremely important that we continue to do our part to help these students start their day with a healthy and nutritious breakfast, allowing them to focus on learning instead of an empty stomach."
Through consultation with representatives from both the HWDSB and HWCDSB, 16 elementary schools and four high schools were designated as Dawgs Breakfast Program beneficiaries for this school year: Adelaide Hoodless Elementary School, Bennetto Elementary School, Cathy Weaver Elementary School, Dr. Davey Elementary School, Hess Street Elementary School, Hillcrest Elementary School, Parkdale Elementary School, Pauline Johnson Elementary School, Queen Victoria Elementary School, Roxborough Park Elementary School, St. Ann (Hamilton) Catholic School, St. Brigid Catholic School, St. Lawrence Catholic School, St. Michael Catholic School, St. Patrick Catholic School, Westwood Elementary School, Cathedral High School, Sir John A. McDonald Secondary School, Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School and Mountain Secondary School.
"School nutrition programs can play such an important role in the holistic approach to education," said Wayne Joudrie, Chair, HWDSB Foundation. "We know that a healthy start to the day means students are more attentive and ready to learn throughout the day. The bi-product of such programs support healthy eating in general and play a valuable role in developing good habits and educating students and their families."
"The HWCDSB is grateful and expresses its sincerest thanks to the Bulldogs Foundation for its annual support of school nutrition programs," said Toni Kovach, Assistant Superintendent of Education, HWCDSB. "Through the generosity of the Bulldogs Foundation and in partnership with community agencies, students are provided with a nutritious breakfast and healthy snacks that allow them to fully realize their learning potential while also teaching them about healthy eating habits. Everyone in the school community - teachers, parents and students - wishes to express how grateful they are and how much they value the school nutrition program."
The Bulldogs Foundation established the Dawgs Breakfast Program in 2009-10 and has now contributed $411,500 to the initiative in its six years of existence. The Foundation itself was formed in 2007 and its mission is to enrich the lives of children and youth in the Greater Hamilton Area through cash donations, gifts in kind and the assignment of tickets. By doing so, the Foundation aims to promote the creativity of interactive programs involving education, physical fitness and personal well-being. The main purpose of the Foundation is to strengthen and broaden the base of the Hamilton Bulldogs community support by providing funds to non-profit community groups and by supporting educational and community programs.
