Springfield Falcons News Release
Springfield, Mass. - Andrei Vasilevskiy and the Syracuse Crunch blanked the Springfield Falcons, 2-0, tonight at the MassMutual Center and snapped the team's 11-game winning streak.
Despite the loss, the Falcons maintain control of both the Northeast Division and Eastern Conference with 35 points. The team moves to 17-8-1-0 on the season and 2-2-0-0 in the eight-game season series with the Crunch. The victory lifts the Crunch to 14-7-3-0.
Springfield goaltender Anton Forsberg stopped 23 of 24 shots as his 10-game streak comes to an end. Syracuse goaltender Vasilevskiy picked up his second consecutive shutout, turning away all 26 shots on goal. The Falcons were unable to convert on three power play opportunities, while the penalty kill unit stopped all four Syracuse man-advantages.
Syracuse opened scoring late in the first period and carried their 1-0 lead through the second intermission. Just after the Falcons killed off a tripping minor on Jaime Sifers, the Crunch struck. Nikita Nesterov fired off a shot from the top of the left circle that beat Forsberg top shelf with 1:59 remaining in the period. Crunch captain Mike Angelidis and Vladislav Namestnikov each picked up a point for the assist.
After an even second period, Mike Blunden added an empty net goal with 47 seconds remaining in the game to give the Falcons their first lost since Nov. 11.
The Springfield Falcons travel to face the Norfolk Admirals at the Scope Arena on Dec. 12 and 13.
