Sharks Enter First 3-In-3 Weekend of Season - Worcester Sharks Weekly

Shark Snap Shot:

The Worcester Sharks (10-10-2-0, 22pts) chomped two out of a possible six points in three games last week. Worcester began the week with a 4-2 loss in Portland on Tuesday to kick off a four game road trip. The Sharks defeated the IceCaps 1-0 in St. John's on Friday but dropped a 3-2 decision to the IceCaps in St. John's on Saturday. Worcester went 1-2-0-0 in three games last week despite outshooting their opponents 130-61.

Worcester sits in 4th place in the Atlantic Division with 22 points (10-10-2-0) and 13th overall in the Eastern Conference. The Sharks are just five points behind the Hartford Wolf Pack for the 8th and final playoff spot in the East (Sharks have two games in hand).

Highlights from the week include a 20 save shutout from Sharks goaltender Aaron Dell in the 1-0 win in St. John's on Friday. Daniil Tarasov recorded three points (2-1-3) and 20 shots on goal in three games last week while Melker Karlsson scored his team leading third power play goal of the season on Saturday. Evan Trupp scored the fastest goal in Sharks history just 22 seconds into the game on Saturday in the 3-2 loss in St. John's and Micheal Haley scored his team leading 7th goal in Portland on Tuesday.

Matt Tennyson returned to Worcester on Dec 2 after appearing in one game with San Jose while goaltender Troy Grosenick was returned to Worcester on Dec 9 after posting a 1-1-0 record with a 1.52 GAA and a .948 save % in the NHL. Melker Karlsson received his first NHL recall on Dec 9 while Nick Jones was returned to the Indy Fuel (ECHL) on Dec 7 after appearing in one game for Worcester (0-0-0).

The Worcester Sharks player of the week nominee is forward Daniil Tarasov. The 23-year-old from Moscow, Russia recorded three points (2-1-3), was +1, and fired 20 shots on goal in three games last week to lead the way offensively for the Sharks. Tarasov currently has a four game point streak (2-2-4) and leads the club with 14 points (5-9-14) and 70 shots on goal.

The Worcester Sharks will play their first 3-in-3 stretch with three games this weekend!

On Friday, the Sharks conclude their four game road trip with a 7pm start in Hartford vs. the Wolf Pack.

On Saturday, December 13 join us for Worcester IceCats Night presented by RCAP Solutions when the Sharks host the Manchester Monarchs at 7pm. The Sharks will wear a specialty IceCats jersey similar to the one worn during their first AHL season in Worcester in 1994-95. MILESTONE ALERT:

Head Coach Roy Sommer surpassed Frank Mathers (1256 games coached) for the most games coached in AHL history on March 26 in the Sharks 5-3 win in Lewiston, ME over the Portland Pirates. Coach Sommer has coached 1290 AHL games - all with the SJ Sharks AHL affiliates. In total, Coach Sommer has been a head coach in 1,626 games in the AHL and ECHL. Roy needs 3 more wins to tie John Paddock (589) for the 3rd most wins in AHL history.

The Worcester Sharks (9-9-2-0, 20pts) began their four game road trip with a 4-2 loss to the host Portland Pirates (12-9-0-0, 24pts) in front of 1,344 fans at the Cross Insurance Arena on Tuesday night. The game was originally scheduled for Nov 26 but was postponed due to wintery weather.

Worcester outshot Portland 45-19 in the contest but Mike McKenna made 43 saves in the Pirates net. The Pirates led 2-0 before Daniil Tarasov and Micheal Haley tied the score for Worcester but Justin Hodgman netted the game winner with 3:27 left in the third period.

12.5.14 - St. John's 0 - Worcester 1 - W - Mile One Centre - St. John's NFLD

The Worcester Sharks (10-9-2-0, 20pts) four game road trip continued with a 1-0 win over the host St. John's IceCaps (9-11-4-0, 23pts) in front of 5,673 fans at the Mile One Centre on Friday night. Aaron Dell made 20 saves for Worcester in his first AHL win of the season while Daniil Tarasov's goal at 3:12 of the third period stood tall. Connor Hellebuyck made 41 saves for the IceCaps as St. John's lost their 3rd consecutive game by a 1-0 score.

12.6.14 - St. John's 2 - Worcester 3 - L - Mile One Centre - St. John's NFLD

The Worcester Sharks (10-10-2-0, 20pts) four game road trip continued with a 3-2 loss to the host St. John's IceCaps (10-11-4-0, 25pts) in front of 5,747 fans at the Mile One Centre on Saturday night. Worcester outshot St. John's 43-22 in the contest and received goals from Evan Trupp and Melker Karlsson. Will O'Neill scored twice on the power play for the IceCaps while Connor Hellebuyck made 41 saves in net for St. John's in the victory.

Sharks in the Atlantic:

The Worcester Sharks (10-10-2-0, 22pts in 22gp) are in 4th place in the Atlantic Division; which is 10 points behind the 1st place Monarchs (32pts in 22gp), six points behind the 2nd place Pirates (28pts in 24gp), three points behind the 3rd place IceCaps (25pts in 26gp), and percentage points ahead the 5th place Bruins (22pts in 23gp) to round out a very choppy Atlantic Division.

*OT... the Worcester Sharks won just one overtime game in 2013-14, but are already 2-2 in overtime through 22 games this season.

*Quick Strikes (thanks Ballou)... On Oct 29 vs the Pirates, the first-period goals by Matt Tennyson and Micheal Haley, one at 16:37 and the next at 16:53, were four seconds shy of the team record. Garrett Stafford and Tomas Plihal scored 12 seconds apart in the second period on Feb 2, 2007 against Bridgeport at the DCU Center. It was only the fourth time in nine seasons the Sharks have scored goals less than 20 seconds apart.

*Fast start... the goal by Evan Trupp just 22 seconds into the first period on Dec 6 in St. John's was the fast goal to start a game in Sharks history. Worcester lost the game 3-2.

*Good Boys... the Worcester Sharks are the 2nd least penalized team in the AHL averaging 11.00 minutes per game....the Sharks have been shorthanded just 70 times this season (3.18 per game) which is the least times shorthanded in the AHL.

*Pro Debuts: Gus Young (Yale) made his professional debut in the Sharks 4-1 win over the Portland Pirates on Oct 26.

*Breaking down the roster.... The Sharks opening roster featured 11 Americans, nine Canadians, two Swedes, one German, and one Russian.

*Oh boy...Troy in the Shootout!.... goaltender Troy Grosenick went 6-0 last season in the shootout - tied for most shootout wins in the AHL.... Troy stopped 25 of 28 shootout attempts (.892%) and was the only goalie to have at least six wins in the shootout without a shootout loss!

*4 National Champions... The Sharks have four players that won the NCAA Division 1 Championship.... Gus Young was captain with Yale University in 2013....Travis Oleksuk with University Minnesota Duluth in 2011...Bryan Lerg with Michigan State in 2007.... and Adam Burish with Wisconsin in 2006.

*Memorial Cup... rookie defenseman Konrad Abeltshauser won the Memorial Cup in 2013 with the Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL) and was named to the 2013 Memorial Cup All-Star Team.

*Stanley Cup... Adam Burish won the Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2010.

*Swedish Elite League Championship.... both Melker Karlsson and Petter Emanuelsson won back-to-back championships with Skelleftea AIK in the SWEHL in 2013 and 2014.

*Tallest Shark.... Worcester Sharks rookie defenseman Taylor Doherty is the tallest player in team history standing at 6'8" 235lbs.... Doherty has six goals, 29 assists, and 291 penalty minutes in 194 games with the Worcester Sharks. Taylor has yet to make his NHL debut.

*First Pro Goals this season... Ryan Carpenter scored his 1st pro goal (Andrew Hammond) in 3-2OTW at Binghamton on Oct 11...Chris Tierney scored his 1st (Malcolm Subban) in 4-2W vs. Providence on Nov 8.

*Sharks in the Atlantic... went 21-22-1-2 vs. the Atlantic in 2013-14 and are 6-5-0-0 in divisional play this season.

*Massachusetts!... the Sharks have one player that hails from Massachusetts this season (Gus Young - Dedham).

*Keeping your hat on (Thanks Ballou)... Worcester had gone 263 games without one of its players recording a hat trick before Daniil Tarasov scored three goals in Springfield on Oct 26. That was easily the longest active streak in the AHL. The Sharks' last hat trick had belonged to Dan DaSilva, who scored three times in Manchester during a 5-2 Worcester victory in Manchester on Feb. 14, 2010. Freddie Hamilton scored the first home hat trick in 206 games with three goals in a 5:12 span in the third period in a 4-1 win over the Pirates on Oct 26, 2014. It was the first home hat trick since P.J. Fenton had one on Feb. 28, 2009 in the Sharks' 7-3 victory over Springfield. In all, Worcester players have recorded hat tricks only ten times in the franchise's 650 games. The Sharks are 10-0 in those games and 1-15-3 in the 19 games in which the opposition has had a hat trick.

* Brothers... Freddie Hamilton is the older brother of Dougie Hamilton, who currently plays with the Boston Bruins.... Rylan Schwartz is the younger brother of Jayden Schwartz, who currently plays for the St. Louis Blues.

*Major Bonneau... Worcester Sharks tough guy Jimmy Bonneau has racked up 53 fighting majors in 133 games for the Worcester Sharks. Bonneau has set the Worcester Sharks record for most fighting majors in a season in 2011-12 with 22, surpassing Frazer McLaren (21 in 2008-09). Jimmy has 125 fighting majors in 328 AHL games along with 930 penalty minutes.

*Five for fighting...
