Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks (17-13-0-3) picked up a 4-1 defeat over the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers (21-7-1) Sunday at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
The win continued the team's recent hot streak, as it was the Hawks' eighth victory in their last nine games.
Former Medicine Hat Tiger Miles Koules opened the scoring for Portland against his former team 6:37 into the game to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. The Hawks extended it to 2-0 at the 8:44 mark when Keegan Iverson rifled a shot from the point past Medicine Hat goaltender Marek Langhamer, a lead Portland took into the second period.
Paul Bittner made it a three-goal game midway through the second when he scored on a backhand from the slot at the 11:03 mark for a 3-0 advantage. With just 3.5 seconds remaining in the period, the Tigers' Cole Sanford got the visitors on the board to make it a 3-1 game heading into the third.
The two teams traded chances in the third with numerous power plays on each side, and with 56.2 seconds to play and Langhamer on the bench for an extra attacker, Oliver Bjorkstrand picked up the puck in the Portland zone, raced down the ice, beat a defenseman and slid it into the empty net to give the Hawks a 4-1 win.
Adin Hill was terrific in net for Portland, stopping 43 of the 44 shots he faced to earn his seventh victory of the season.
The Hawks are now off until Friday, when they host the Spokane Chiefs at the Coliseum at 7 p.m. in the final home game before the holiday break.
