Kielly Shines Bright in Shootout Win

Austin Bruins News Release

When Zach Driscoll (Apple Valley, MN - St. Cloud State) was called up to the USHL s Omaha Lancers this week, his co-pilot all season, Jake Kielly (Eden Prairie, MN) was handed the reigns as the Austin Bruins (14-7-7) number-one goaltender.

Saturday night, Kielly picked a great time for his best game of the season, leading the Bruins to a 2-1 shootout win over the Minnesota Wilderness (15-7-3) at Riverside Arena in Austin. The win also snapped a five-straight shootout drought and boosted the Bruins into a tie with Minot for first in the Central Division.

The teams skated to a scoreless first period, with the Wilderness generating the better of the scoring chances. Minnesota outshot Austin 10-6, but Kielly made three or four big pad saves on Wilderness chances in tight. Austin was penalized three times in the period, but the NAHL s number-one penalty kill continued to keep the puck out of the net.

Minnesota veteran Darian Romanko (Shoreview, MN) broke the scoreless tie at 5:35 of the second period on a 2-on-1. Romanko chose to shoot instead of pass and sniped the puck under the crossbar for the game s only goal through 40 minutes. The Bruins only managed three shots in the frame, and weren t able to challenge Wilderness rookie goalie Ryan Anderson (Roseau, MN).

Starting the third period on a five-minute power play, the Bruins capitalized on what turned out to be a 4-on-3 man-advantage when Trevor Boyd (Muskegon, MI) scored his fourth goal of the weekend on a wrist shot from the right circle. That tied the game at 1-1 just 2:43 into the period. Austin finally started getting consistent pressure on Anderson in the third, but the Wilderness goaltender matched his counterpart with several game-savers.

The goaltenders dual continued into overtime, with the men between the pipes shining bright all the way to the end. In the shootout, Kielly stonewalled four of five Wilderness shooters to earn the win, with Bruins goals from Boyd and Liam Feeney (Foxboro, MA). The Bruins have now won four straight games, with back-to-back weekend sweeps.

Next Friday, the Bruins will host the Minnesota Magicians at 7:05pm at Riverside Arena, before traveling to Lacrosse, WI Saturday for a 7pm tilt against the Coulee Region Chill.
