Saginaw Takes 5-2 Victory over Sarnia

The Saginaw Spirit played host to the Sarnia Sting on Saturday night, knocking off their West Division rival by a score of 5-2.

The Saginaw Spirit turned in a solid first period, outshining the Sarnia Sting by two goals and leading in shots on net 11-9. The Spirit opened the scoring midway through the period after Dylan Sadowy set up a nice pass for Kris Bennett who fired one home for Saginaw. The goal came at the 13:47 mark and pulled the Spirit ahead of the Sting 1-0. At 16:59 the Spirit cushioned their lead over the Sting as Dylan Sadowy netted the second goal of the night for the Spirit, with the help of Artem Artemov. The teams headed to the locker room for the night's first intermission with the Spirit leading the Sting 2-0.

Just 23 seconds into the second period the Sarnia Sting cut into the two goal Saginaw Spirit lead, making it a 2-1 game. Sarnia's Daniel Nikandrov netted the Sarnia goal, with the assist coming from Hayden Hodgson. The Spirit and Sting exchanged penalties and saw Saginaw's Chase Stewart and Sarnia's Noah Bushnell sit 5 minutes for fighting. The Spirit notched another goal off the stick of Dylan Sadowy, scoring his second of the night and making it a 3-1 game over the Sting at 16:49 of the period. Artem Artemov and Mitchell Stephens had the assists on the play. Sarnia put 10 shots on Saginaw's starting goaltender Jake Paterson. Saginaw finished off the period with 8 shots on goal.

The Saginaw Spirit headed to an early penalty kill after Adam McPhail took two minutes for delay of game in the third period. The Sting saw an opportunity to slice into the Spirit lead and snuck a power play goal past Saginaw's Jake Paterson. Sarnia's Pavel Zacha made it a 3-2 game with the help of Nikita Korostelev and Anthony DeAngleo at the 3:17 mark. Saginaw's Connor Brown reinstated the Spirit's two goal lead midway through the period, to go up 4-2 over the Sting. The Spirit kept the energy rolling and took the reins over the Sting when the Spirit pinned their fifth goal of the evening off the stick of Mitchell Webb 11:40 into the last 20 minutes of play. Connor Brown and Kris Bennett were credited with the assists. Final score for Saturday night's game read Saginaw 5, Sarnia 2, with the Sting leading shots on goal 30-27.

The Saginaw Spirit will welcome the Guelph Storm on Sunday, December 7th at the Dow Event Center. Puck is scheduled to drop at 4:00 p.m.
