TRAVERSE CITY, MI -- The Traverse City Beach Bums continue to add to their pitching staff for the 2015 season with the addition of two lefties, Dylan Stuart and Chris Rice.
Dylan Stuart signed with the Atlanta Braves as an undrafted free agent in 2014. In five games with the Gulf Coast League Braves, he went 1-0 with a 3.24 ERA and struck out nine batters in 8.1 innings.
The 22-year old signed with the Braves following a standout senior season at the University of California at Riverside. For the Highlanders, he went 3-0 with a 1.44 ERA and four saves in 26 games on his way to earning All-Big West First Team accolades.
The senior season helped Stuart bookend a career with high honors from the Big West. As a freshman in 2011 he was named the Big West Freshman Pitcher of the Year after going 1-1 with a 1.72 ERA and striking out 29 batters in 31.1 innings.
In the two seasons Stuart pitched out of the bullpen for the Highlanders, he combined to go 4-1 with four saves and a 1.53 ERA spanning 100 innings of work. A control specialist, during his final three seasons at UC Riverside, Stuart surrendered just 1.72 BB/9IP.
Chris Rice spent the 2014 season with the San Rafael Pacifics in the Pacific Association of Professional Baseball Clubs. For San Rafael, the 23-year old went 3-3 in 29 games (two starts) with a solid 2.93 ERA. In 58.1 innings of work, he struck out 63 and walked 19.
The lefty made two stops in his collegiate career. He started at Owens Community College in Perrysburg, OH, going 1-2 in six games, striking out 27 batters in 21.1 innings. Following his stint with the Express, Rice played at Mott Community College where he posted a 2-5 record with a 3.43 ERA. He continued to pile up the punchouts, whiffing 49 batters in 42.0 innings of work.
The Beach Bums will play 51 games at Wuerfel Park in 2015 starting with the home opener and a FANtastic Fireworks Friday on May 22 at 7:05 PM and concluding with Fan Appreciation Sunday, September 6, 2014.
