Player Spotlight: Curran Redal

December 4, 2014 - Frontier League (FL)
River City Rascals News Release

Curran Redal is a player familiar to many River City Rascals fans. A Rascals outfielder since 2012, Curran will have a new listing next to his name to start the 2015 season. Curran Redal has officially been designated with the "Veteran" tag for the River City Rascals, a classification given so a player can continue playing past the age limit. Starting his 4th season as a Rascal, Curran will look to improve on his .312 batting average, 24 runs batted in, and .993 fielding percentage season of 2014 while adjusting to his new title.

Curran can't really remember ever "getting into baseball." He had two other brothers and a father who all enjoyed the game, so it seemed quite natural to play the game that everyone else played. "Playing ball in the backyard was just what we did as kids," Redal says. So, it seems quite natural that Curran is still enjoying and playing the game that seemed such a natural part of his life from a young age.

Curran owes his spot on the team to a college roommate that began playing for the Rascals first. The roommate spoke to Manager Steve Brook about Curran, and based on that suggestion, Brook called to ask Curran to join the team. Curran says he "was aware of the Rascals" from the time his roommate signed and that the opportunity to join the team has "led to good things."

Curran's favorite moment of being a Rascal came last year in "one of the three champagne showers that we had." He says its "hard to beat that feeling" of last season and all that the team accomplished including some of his other favorite moments such as "finishing with the top record," "winning the division," "advancing through each round of playoffs," and "playing in the championship." When examining his career so far, last season was Curran's greatest accomplishment. And, he's "looking forward to coming back" because of everything they accomplished and the one thing Curran has yet to accomplish- winning a championship.

Redal says it's a "real odd feeling" to be the veteran of the Rascals. Changing roles will cause anyone to reflect on the past; it mostly makes Curran reflect on "the stupid stuff he did as a rookie." He knows he has a different perspective than he had as a rookie or the rookies have now. It definitely made Curran aware of how he has "progressed over [his] career." But, Curran can't reflect for long. He knows that being the veteran means that "there's more responsibility" and that he "can't slack on preparation." And, he is ready to "work [his] butt off" to come in to next season "prepared to be an effective leader."

All of Curran's preparations for next season will "begin in the weight room." He says, "The extended run in the playoffs breaks you down a bit more." But, after resting and "getting over the injuries that happened last season," Curran will be ready to walk into the clubhouse and lead the team as the veteran he is. He will "lead by example" by "getting to the gym and staying in shape" and, as Curran puts it, "playing the game the way I hope my team wants to play the game." He knows this approach will "lead to wins." But, it will also help lead to Curran's ultimate goal- to win a championship. As Curran says, there is "no reason to come back if that's not your goal." So, Curran will come back. And he will use his new veteran status to try to achieve his ultimate goal and create a new greatest moment.
