Youngstown Phantoms News Release

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- The Phantoms (11-6-3) earned a 2-1 win over the Chicago Steel on Wednesday morning, in the second of two home School Day Games this season. Kiefer Sherwood and Trey Bradley were the goal scorers for the Phantoms, who picked up their first win of the season over the Steel.

The Steel controlled the flow of play throughout most of the opening period, and netted the game's first goal 10:34 into the frame, when forward Mason Bergh scored on the high stick side of Phantoms goaltender Chris Birdsall, giving Chicago a 1-0 lead that held up throughout the remainder of the period.

The Phantoms started to turn the tables in the second, peppering Steel goaltender Cale Morris with shots and getting a number quality of scoring chances. The Phantoms' hard work paid off late in the second while on the power play, when forward Kyle Connor tried to feed a backdoor pass that deflected off of Sherwood's skate and into the net, tying the game, 1-1, 17:22 into the second.

"Kyle made a great backdoor pass to me and I tried to get a little of my stick on it, but it actually ended up going in off of my skate," said Sherwood. "I've been trying to shoot the puck more as of late and create chances, so it was nice to see one go in."

Youngstown's power play struck again, and gave the Phantoms the lead 2:36 later, when a pile up in front of the net resulted in a loose puck in the low slot that Bradley fired in past a sprawling Morris, putting the Phantoms up, 2-1, after 40 minutes.

"The coaches have told me to shoot more in practice, and I'm bearing down more, so it was nice to get another one," said Bradley, who has scored his first two goals of the season in his last three games.

"The last four or five games have been the best hockey Trey has played for us, and it starts with his compete level," remarked Head Coach Anthony Noreen. "He's been really feisty on the puck and hard on his back pressure. He's making plays and being rewarded for it."

The Phantoms picked up the pace in the third, continuing to get a plethora of scoring chances, including a couple of breakaways from Ryan Lomberg and Max Letunov, and a shot that rang of the post from Connor, but the Phantoms did not need any more offense, as Birdsall held steady in goal, stopping 27 shots on the night to preserve the 2-1 Phantoms win.

"I thought they were the hungrier and faster team in the first period, but Birdsall really kept us in it," said Noreen. "I thought we rallied and had a great start to the second and that carried over into the third. Our second and third period effort earned it for us with some big penalty kills, and out effort and team defense was excellent for the last 40 minutes."

The Phantoms were outshot on the day, 27-23, however the power play was the difference maker, converting on two of their three chances. The Phantoms next take the ice on Friday night, when Team USA's Under-18 squad comes to the Covelli Centre for a 7:05 faceoff.
