 Waterloo Black Hawks

A Misfitting Final Score

November 29, 2014 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Two empty net goals in the final 30 seconds made a close game appear unjustly lopsided Saturday when the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders topped the Waterloo Black Hawks 5-2 at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

Most of the scoring happened in the third. Waterloo entered the period trailing 1-0, but seconds after a power play ended at 5:02, Tyler Sheehy knocked a rebound into an open side. Just over two minutes later, the RoughRiders reassumed the lead when Hawks goalie Kris Carlson was screened, allowing Casey Jerry to slip a shot from the left circle between the netminder and the post.

Ethan Spaxman brought Waterloo back to even teams at 8:45, carrying the puck from his own zone across the RoughRider blue line and snapping a wrist shot into the net, low to the glove side.

Derek Daschke set up the go-ahead - and game-winning - goal for the home team at 12:59. His diagonal pass across the slot and into the right circle put the puck on Hugh McGing's stick, and McGing fired it between the pipes. Tyler Gernhofer and Andrew Gaus notched empty net goals separated by four seconds at 19:33 and 19:37.

For the second consecutive meeting between the rivals, Jiri Fronk had netted the opening score, the only goal of the first forty minutes, at 16:15 of the first. Fronk received a pass in transition and lifted a wrist shot into the net from the right faceoff dot.

Waterloo had all of the shots for the remainder of the period and finished the frame with a 10-8 edge in chances. The second period was scoreless, but Cedar Rapids had more opportunities beginning with the first seven shots on net in the frame and ending the segment with 17 opportunities to seven.

Carlson finished the night with 29 saves, while Ben Blacker picked up the win with 33.

The Hawks remain on the road next week, visiting chilly Fargo on Thursday and Friday to meet the Force.
