Albany Devils News Release

ALBANY, NY - Joe Whitney scored the game-winning goal midway through the third period, helping the Albany Devils to a 2- 1 victory against the Utica Comets Saturday at Times Union Center. The goal and the win came at a cost however.

Raman Hrabarenka was helped off the ice after Utica's Darren Archibald hit the Devils defenseman up high. Archibald was given a five minute major for charging and a game misconduct.

On the ensuing power play, Whitney's one-timer from the left circle beat Utica's Joe Cannata glove side at 11:07.

"Obviously, we scored on the power play and we probably could have had a couple of more, but you never like to see that," said Head Coach Rick Kowalsky. "I just hope he is okay and he recovers quickly."

Whitney's goal, which extended his point streak to four games, still found its way over the line despite his stick breaking on the shot. The play was equivalent to a broken bat home run.

"It's like a blooper double down the line that kind of has an English on it and goes to the right or the left and you grab an extra base," Whitney said. "Last night in Atlantic City, I got a good pass and my stick broke, so I didn't even have an opportunity to score on that one. I got it off and had a little something I guess."

The Devils have points in their last four games, winning three. They improve to 10-6-1-4 overall and 7-2-1-2 on home ice.

Keith Kinkaid is 2-0-1 in his last three games and 6-1-3 overall. He made 28 saves and was named the game's number one star.

"They're a great team and they made a push," Kinkaid said. "I think our guys, coming off a big win yesterday, we just had a great game overall; kept it simple and made my job easier."

It took just more than 35 minutes for the game's first goal. Graham Black ended the scoreless tie at 15:38 of the second, beating Cannata on a wrister down the left side.

The Comets answered when Will Acton's shot from the slot caromed off the end boards and off Kinkaid at 16:32.

Whitney's power-play goal gave Albany its fifth man-advantage tally in the last four games. The penalty kill has been equally impressive, killing 32-34 in the last nine games. It was a perfect 2-2 against the Comets.
