Erie Otters News Release

London, Ontario - Nick Betz nets the shootout winner as the Erie Otters slow down the red hot London Knights, taking the Friday night matchup 3-2 at the Budweiser Gardens.

The first period started with a frantic pace, as the Knights forced Devin Williams to make a few stops in the early moments of the first period. Erie responded with the first goal of the game at 4:25 of the period. Strome fed the puck to Nick Baptiste in the right wing corner of the London zone. Baptiste made the move towards the front of the goal where Alex DeBrincat was crashing the net. DeBrincat poked the puck past Michael Giugovaz for his 23rd of the season, as the Otters led 1-0. Erie had to kill off two London power play chances in the frame with Williams steady early. The Otters led in shots 9-8 after one period.

Erie continued to pressure London in the early going of the second period, holding the Knights without a shot on goal until the first TV timeout. London countered drawing a few penalties but Devin Williams shut the door on the penalty kill with a few close range stops. The Otters and the 2nd ranked power play unit got a chance late in the period, where they capitalized to extend the lead to two. Kyle Pettit deflected a shot wide of Giugovaz, but Pettit found the puck behind the goal. He then banked the puck off a defender in front, slipping by the net minder, to put the Otters up 2-0 before the period ended.

London started their comeback in the opening minute of the third period as Mitchell Marner tallied his 22nd of the season on the power play, beating Williams on a back door play 33 seconds into the frame. The Knights tied the game at two at 4:18 when Tait Seguin fired the puck towards the Otters net. Williams made the stop looking to deflect the puck towards the far corner. When the Erie net minder deflected the puck, it hit Drake Rymsha in front and rolled into the back of the goal. Williams held down the fort stopping 14 shots in the third period as the game moved into overtime.

Despite trading chances in the extra frame, neither team could beat a goaltender as the game moved to a shootout. Max Domi scored as the first shooter for London, but that was all as Williams stopped the next three shooters. Nick Baptiste tied the shootout at one beating Giugovaz to the blocker with a wrist shot. Then Nick Betz ended the game with the backhand winner as the fourth shooter.

Nick Baptiste recorded his first points as an Otter with an assist on DeBrincat's first period tally. Darren Raddysh saw his point streak end at 16 games, a record for an Erie defenseman. The Otters will host the Belleville Bulls Saturday night in their annual Teddy Bear Toss game.
