Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa-The Cedar Valley's favorite hockey club will team up with eastern Iowa's fastest stock car driver on December 12th in support of organ and tissue donation, the Waterloo Black Hawks announced on Friday.

Cedar Rapids-native Joey Gase, driver of the NASCAR Nationwide Series Donate Life #52 car, will be on hand with his race car when the Hawks host the Sioux City Musketeers next month. In coordination with the Iowa Donor Network, it will be Waterloo's second annual Organ Donor Awareness Night.

"Approximately half of all Iowans are registered as organ and tissue donors, but that means there are still many who can sign up to potentially help the hundreds of people here in the state currently on a transplant waiting list," said Black Hawks Vice President Mike Falk. "As an organization, we are so thankful for organ donors because without their act of kindness, there are friends and fans we would not see at the rink today."

When Joey Gase's mother, Mary Jo, died unexpectedly in 2011, the then-18-year-old was the family member on hand who was asked whether her organs would be donated. It was a decision during a time of personal sadness which helped impact many lives for the better. Since then, and throughout his racing career, Gase has been an advocate for organ donation.

This summer, Gase appeared in all 33 NASCAR Nationwide races and finished 20th in the season standings. His best finish was 11th on May 3rd at Talladega Superspeedway, where he led a lap for the first time in the series. Gase also made his Sprint Cup debut this season, taking the wheel four times on stock car racing's top circuit, most recently on November 9th at Phoenix International Raceway.

Before the puck drops and through 8 p.m. on December 12th, Gase will be available to meet fans for pictures and autographs. Those in attendance will also have the opportunity to get an up-close look at Gase's racecar. The Iowa Donor Network will have a table set up with information on organ and tissue donation, where fans can also enter to win an autographed hockey stick and two tickets to a future Black Hawks game.
