Spokane Chiefs News Release
SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs defeated the Victoria Royals 4-2 on Wednesday night, earning their 4th consecutive win and jumping to 2nd Place in the U.S. Division. Calder Brooks scored twice, Jason Fram and Adam Helewka each had a goal and an assist, and Kailer Yamamoto added three assists in the win.
The Chiefs got the scoring underway early as Brooks scored his 9th goal of the season at the 2:48 mark of the 1st Period. Helewka dropped the puck from behind Royals' goaltender Coleman Vollrath's goal. Brooks picked it up and was able to cross in front of Vollrath unobstructed, punching it into an open net.
The Royals responded late in the 1st Period as Greg Chase, who was recently acquired in a trade with the Calgary Hitmen, took advantage of a great set-up by Swedish forward Axel Blomqvist to tie the game. Blomqvist snapped a pass from inside the right circle back to Chase who was wide open on the backside.
Spokane retook the lead late in the 2nd Period as Fram scored from the right point on a shot that was deflected by a Royals defenseman to fool Vollrath. Just four minutes later, with under a minute remaining in the period, Helewka took the puck from the right circle, split three Royals on his way to the high slot and snapped his team-leading 13th goal top shelf. The goal gave the Chiefs a 3-1 lead into the 2nd Intermission.
Victoria's Austin Carroll scored his 18th goal of the season midway through the 3rd Period, but the Chiefs held on to win after Brooks tapped in an empty netter to seal it. The Chiefs improved to 8-0-1-0 when leading after two periods.
Garret Hughson started in goal for Spokane and stopped 30 of 32 shots. Vollrath finished with 35 saves on 38 shots faced. Both teams were scoreless on the power play.
The Chiefs stay home through Thanksgiving, hosting the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Saturday night for Native American Appreciation Night presented by Coeur d'Alene Resort & Casino.
Tickets for Saturday night and all Chiefs home games are available in-person at the Chiefs' Ticket Office, over the phone at (509) 535-PUCK or (800) 325-SEAT, via TicketsWest outlets and online at www.ticketswest.com.
